Chapter 10 - THE CONFESSION

Daniel agreed to speak with investigators.

His attorney negotiated terms.

Then he began talking.

He admitted that Grant had used him to monitor employees.

Including me.

He admitted knowing about suspicious payroll transactions.

And he admitted being at the warehouse the night Caleb died.

But he denied setting the fire.

According to Daniel, Grant had ordered him to deliver documents to the warehouse.

When he arrived, Caleb was arguing with two men.

Daniel left.

Hours later, the building burned.

Investigators checked his account against other evidence.

Some details matched.

Others remained uncertain.

Then Daniel revealed something important.

Caleb had hidden copies of the illegal shipping records.

Where?

Daniel didn't know.

But he remembered Caleb saying:

“If they burn the warehouse, the mountain will still remember.”

Nathaniel stared at the statement.

“The mountain?”

Rebecca nodded.

“Any idea what that means?”

Nathaniel thought for a moment.

Then his face changed.

“Caleb had a cabin.”

The cabin stood near a remote section of the Teton foothills.

It had belonged to their grandfather.

Caleb visited often.

Investigators searched the property.

At first, they found nothing.

Then a technician noticed a metal box hidden beneath a loose floorboard.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

And a small external drive.

The files contained shipping records.

False permits.

Financial transfers.

And correspondence connecting Grant Holloway to illegal timber operations.

But the most important evidence was a recorded conversation.

Caleb's voice.

Grant's voice.

Caleb said:

“I'm taking this to the authorities.”

Grant replied:

“You have no idea what you're threatening.”

Caleb answered:

“I know exactly what I'm doing.”

The recording ended.

Nathaniel listened without moving.

When it finished, he closed his eyes.

For six years, he'd wondered whether Caleb had died because he tried to do the right thing.

Now he knew.

His brother had been brave.

And someone had wanted that bravery silenced.
