Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO OWNED EVERY SECRET

Eleanor Voss had spent forty years building a reputation as a respected attorney and philanthropist.

She served on hospital boards.

Funded scholarships.

Attended charity galas.

Her name appeared on plaques throughout Boston.

Nobody looking at her public life would have guessed she had helped erase the identities of vulnerable children.

Investigators began examining the trust that owned the Blackwater property.

Financial records revealed payments from private security firms, medical contractors, and several businesses connected to organized crime.

Some of those businesses belonged to Dominic's father.

Others belonged to rival families.

The pattern was larger than either of us had imagined.

Blackwater House had not served one criminal organization.

It had served several.

Children were used as leverage.

Their identities were manipulated.

Their families were threatened.

And the people responsible paid to keep the system hidden.

My mother had discovered the financial records.

Adrian had discovered the transport network.

Together, they had tried to expose it.

Eleanor had stopped them.

When Detective Ortiz questioned her, Eleanor denied everything.

She claimed the old records were unreliable.

She described my mother as confused.

She suggested I was exploiting a vulnerable patient's memories.

Then she made a mistake.

She referred to me by my birth name.

Grace Ellison.

A name I had not given her during the interview.

Ortiz noticed.

“How do you know that name?”

Eleanor smiled.

“I remember the case.”

Ortiz leaned forward.

“Then you remember signing the death certificate.”

Eleanor's smile faded.

Within days, investigators obtained a warrant to search the old Blackwater property.

Dominic called me.

“They're going in.”

I looked toward my mother, sleeping in her hospital bed.

“Will they find Adrian?”

Dominic hesitated.

“I don't know.”

I closed my eyes.

“Then find the truth.”

His voice softened.

“We will.”

That evening, police entered the underground facility beneath the coastal estate.

Behind a sealed wall, they found a metal cabinet.

Inside were hundreds of files.

Each labeled with a number.

One file bore the code:

4-17-9.
