Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO CHOSE A DIFFERENT LIFE

Two years passed.

My mother continued receiving rehabilitation and supportive care.

Her memory remained imperfect.

Some days were difficult.

But she lived in a safe community with people who knew her history and respected her dignity.

Adrian rebuilt his relationship with Dominic.

The brothers met regularly.

They argued about football.

Shared meals.

And slowly learned how to be family again.

Dominic continued changing his life.

He stepped away from criminal operations.

He cooperated with legal proceedings.

He devoted part of his remaining wealth to independently managed programs supporting survivors of institutional abuse.

I completed my master's degree.

I became an advanced practice nurse.

And I continued working at St. Bartholomew's.

Dominic never asked me to stop.

Our relationship grew slowly.

We had difficult conversations.

About his past.

About my fears.

About trust.

Sometimes we disagreed.

But he listened.

And I learned that accepting love did not mean surrendering independence.

One evening, we walked along Boston Harbor.

The water reflected the city lights.

Dominic stopped beside the railing.

“Grace.”

I looked at him.

“Yes?”

He took my hand.

“I spent most of my life believing power meant never needing anyone.”

I smiled faintly.

“And now?”

He looked toward the water.

“Now I know the bravest thing I ever did was admit I was wrong.”

I squeezed his hand.

He turned toward me.

“I don't want to own your future.”

My eyes filled.

“I want to be invited into it.”

I smiled.

“Then ask.”

May you like

He laughed softly.

And lowered himself onto one knee.
