Chapter 10 - THE DIVORCE HE FINALLY UNDERSTOOD

The divorce hearing took place four months after Adrian first demanded it.

Elena wore a navy dress.

Her dark hair was pinned neatly behind her ears.

Adrian sat across from her.

For eight years, he'd called her his wife.

Now they were two people negotiating how to raise a child.

Elena requested primary physical custody.

Adrian agreed.

She requested a structured parenting schedule.

He agreed.

She requested that Sofia's needs be handled independently of any reconciliation between them.

He agreed.

Then Elena's attorney addressed financial matters.

Adrian looked at Elena.

“You don't have to leave with nothing.”

She met his eyes.

“I don't want your fortune.”

“I know.”

“I want Sofia to have a stable home.”

Adrian nodded.

“She will.”

Elena hesitated.

“And I want to know that when you say you'll be there, you'll actually come.”

His throat tightened.

“I understand.”

The court approved the divorce and parenting arrangements after reviewing the relevant information.

When it was over, Elena stood.

Adrian approached slowly.

“Elena.”

She turned.

“Yes?”

He swallowed.

“I'm sorry.”

Her eyes filled.

“I know.”

He looked at her.

“I don't expect forgiveness.”

She nodded.

“Good.”

Then she walked away.

And Adrian finally understood that loving someone didn't give him the right to keep them.
