Chapter 15 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS NEVER EXPENDABLE

Three years after the night Dante found Gemma injured beside her suitcase, Boston Harbor looked different.
Not because the water had changed.
But because the people standing beside it had.
Dante Lombardi no longer controlled an empire built on fear.
His legitimate businesses were smaller.
More transparent.
And accountable to independent oversight.
Luca worked with a nonprofit supporting survivors of coercive confinement.
He had built friendships.
A home.
A future.
Gemma had completed her legal studies and continued leading her organization.
She helped families recover compensation.
Find housing.
Return to school.
And Dante?
He learned to live without controlling everything.
Their wedding took place in a small garden overlooking the harbor.
Forty guests.
No political alliances.
No armed entourages.
Luca stood beside Dante.
Gemma walked down the aisle wearing a simple ivory dress.
Dante stared.
For a moment, he remembered the night he'd found her on the bedroom floor.
Pale.
Bleeding.
Trying to protect him even while she was hurt.
He swallowed.
Gemma reached him.
“You okay?” she whispered.
Dante smiled.
“Better than okay.”
They exchanged vows.
Dante promised honesty.
Patience.
And a life in which Gemma would never have to make herself smaller to be loved.
Gemma promised to stand beside him.
Not behind him.
Not beneath him.
Beside him.
When they kissed, the guests applauded.
Luca wiped his eyes.
Enzo pretended not to.
Later, during the reception, Dante found Gemma standing near the water.
He joined her.
“Happy?” he asked.
She smiled.
“Very.”
He took her hand.
For a while, they watched the harbor lights.
Then Gemma said:
“You know, I almost didn't leave that letter.”
Dante looked at her.
“Why?”
She smiled sadly.
“Because part of me hoped you'd come looking.”
Dante's throat tightened.
He turned toward her.
“I'll always come looking.”
Gemma shook her head gently.
“No.”
He frowned.
She smiled.
“You won't have to.”
Dante understood.
She wasn't running anymore.
And he wasn't hiding behind power.
They had chosen each other.
Freely.
Completely.
Without fear.
Dante kissed her forehead.
“Then I'll just stay.”
Gemma leaned against him.
“Good.”
The harbor wind moved through the garden.
Behind them, their friends and family laughed.
Ahead of them lay a future neither could have imagined three years earlier.
And Dante Lombardi finally understood what his father never had.
Love wasn't possession.
It wasn't loyalty purchased with fear.
It wasn't a contract signed to protect an empire.
Love was a choice.
Made every day.
Especially when it was difficult.
Especially when it required courage.
Especially when the person beside you had once been told she was expendable.
Gemma Thorne had never been expendable.
May you like
She had been the person who saved him.
And now, at last, he knew how to save himself.
