Chapter 5 - THE HUSBAND WHO FINALLY BEGGED

I didn't open the door.

"Dante," I said through the wood. "Go away."

Silence.

Then his voice came again.

"Elena, I need to know you're safe."

I laughed.

"That's a little late."

"Please."

I pressed my forehead against the door.

"Did you know Luca was alive?"

A long pause.

Then:

"Yes."

The answer hit me harder than I expected.

Eleven months of grief.

Eleven months of comforting my husband through nightmares.

Eleven months of believing his brother was buried beneath a marble headstone.

All of it built on another lie.

I closed my eyes.

"Did you know about the trust?"

Another pause.

"Some of it."

I felt tears burning my cheeks.

"Did you know Vivian was working for your father?"

Dante didn't answer.

I stepped backward.

"That's what I thought."

"Elena—"

"No."

My voice shook.

"No more explanations through a door. No more secrets. No more deciding what I can handle."

Dante's voice broke.

"I know."

"You don't."

I looked toward Luca.

He stood silently near the window.

I turned back.

"Did you sleep with Vivian?"

The hallway became silent.

Then Dante said:

"No."

I almost laughed.

"She was sitting on our bed with lipstick on her face."

"I know what you saw."

"Then tell me what happened."

Dante exhaled.

"She came to the house claiming she had information about Salvatore. She said she'd only talk privately. I brought her upstairs because I didn't trust the staff."

I closed my eyes.

"And?"

"She kissed me."

My stomach turned.

"I pushed her away."

I remembered his hand resting on Vivian's arm.

I remembered her smudged lipstick.

I remembered the way he'd told me I was making everything bigger than it was.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I was trying to keep you out of it."

I laughed bitterly.

"You kept me out of my own marriage."

Dante went silent.

Then he said:

"You're right."

I stared at the door.

He continued.

"I thought if I controlled everything, I could protect you."

His voice lowered.

"But all I did was make you afraid of me."

Tears slid down my face.

For three years, I'd waited to hear him admit that.

Now it felt almost meaningless.

Because trust doesn't return simply because someone finally names the damage.

A siren sounded outside.

Then another.

Luca looked toward the window.

"Police."

Dante spoke quickly.

"Elena, officers are coming upstairs. I've given them the information about Salvatore."

I swallowed.

"Good."

"Will you let me see you?"

I looked at the door.

Then at my swollen stomach.

"No."

A long silence followed.

Then Dante whispered:

"Okay."

May you like

I heard his footsteps retreat.

And for the first time in our marriage, Dante Moretti accepted the word no.
