Chapter 14 - THE SECOND PROPOSAL

Another year passed.
Isabella turned three.
She loved the ocean.
She collected shells.
She insisted on wearing rain boots even when the sun was shining.
And she adored her father.
Dante had become a consistent presence in her life.
He traveled to see her.
He attended her preschool events.
He learned her favorite songs.
And he never missed a scheduled visit without a serious reason.
His legal matters continued to be resolved through the courts.
He had stepped away from criminal leadership and focused on legitimate work.
He also began therapy.
Not because I demanded it.
Because he wanted to understand why he'd once confused control with love.
Our relationship changed slowly.
We began having coffee together.
Then dinner.
Then long conversations after Isabella went to sleep.
We talked about the past.
The betrayal.
The fear.
The damage.
We didn't pretend it hadn't happened.
But we also began discovering who we were now.
One evening, Dante arrived carrying a small box.
I stared.
"Dante."
He smiled nervously.
"Relax. It's not what you think."
He opened the box.
Inside was my old wedding ring.
The one I'd left beside his watch.
My breath caught.
He looked at it.
"I kept it."
I stared.
"Why?"
"Because it reminded me of the day I lost you."
He closed the box.
"But I'm not asking you to put it back on."
I looked at him.
"Then why bring it?"
He smiled faintly.
"Because I wanted to give it back to you."
I stared.
He continued.
"It belongs to you. You can keep it, sell it, throw it into the ocean. Whatever you want."
Tears filled my eyes.
Dante took a breath.
"And if one day you decide you want to marry me again, I'd rather give you a new ring."
I laughed through tears.
"You're impossible."
He smiled.
"I've been told."
I looked at the old ring.
Then at him.
For the first time, I didn't see the man who had ordered me to put it back on.
May you like
I saw a man who had learned to let me choose.
And that made all the difference.
