Chapter 8 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE HOSPITAL FILE

The truth emerged slowly.
Not through a dramatic confession.
Through documents.
Dates.
Messages.
And the kind of small details people assume nobody will ever examine.
Vincent hired independent counsel to review his own communications and the records he was legally entitled to access.
He discovered that Sophia had sent messages to his former attorney shortly after Emily's birth.
In them, she urged Vincent to avoid involvement with Claire and the baby.
She claimed Claire wanted complete separation.
She said any contact would cause unnecessary conflict.
But the most troubling discovery came from a message Sophia sent to her mother.
As long as Vincent believes Claire wants him gone, Lucas will remain his only real family.
Vincent stared at the words.
He had never questioned Sophia's version of events.
Because it had been convenient.
Because it allowed him to believe that staying away was what Claire wanted.
Because admitting the truth would have required acknowledging that he had chosen one child over another.
When he confronted Sophia, she denied everything.
Then blamed Claire.
Then cried.
Finally, she admitted she'd been afraid Vincent would return to his wife.
“You were still married,” Sophia whispered.
Vincent looked at her.
“And you knew that.”
She began crying.
“I loved you.”
Vincent's expression hardened.
“Then why did you need to destroy my daughter's relationship with me?”
Sophia had no answer.
But Vincent didn't pretend he was innocent.
He knew he had made the original decision.
Sophia had encouraged it.
His in-laws had supported it.
But he had walked out of that delivery room on his own feet.
That night, he called me.
“I found messages.”
I listened.
When he finished, I said:
“I'm sorry she lied to you.”
Vincent was quiet.
Then I continued.
“But you don't get to make her the villain so you can become the victim.”
His breath caught.
“I know.”
“Good.”
For the first time, I believed he might actually understand.
May you like
Not because he had uncovered Sophia's manipulation.
But because he had stopped using it as an excuse.
