Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN WHO CHOSE HER OWN HAPPINESS

For years, people assumed my life had stopped when I left Vincent.
It hadn't.
In Boston, I had built a consulting business specializing in nonprofit financial management.
I helped small organizations create sustainable budgets and improve their operations.
I loved the work.
I loved being Emily's mother.
And slowly, I had learned to love my own life.
Then I met Daniel Hayes.
He was a pediatric orthopedic surgeon.
Kind.
Quiet.
Divorced.
And completely unimpressed by my former husband's reputation.
We met at a school fundraiser.
Daniel accidentally spilled coffee on my notes.
I stared at the papers.
He looked horrified.
“I'm so sorry.”
I laughed.
“You've destroyed three hours of work.”
He closed his eyes.
“That's worse than I thought.”
I smiled.
“Relax. I have backups.”
He grinned.
“Then may I buy you another coffee?”
That was how it began.
Not with a dramatic rescue.
Not with a billionaire.
Just coffee.
Conversation.
And a man who listened.
Daniel never tried to replace Vincent.
He respected Emily's relationship with her father.
He also respected my boundaries.
When he asked me on a date, I hesitated.
“I have a daughter.”
He smiled.
“I know.”
“She comes first.”
“As she should.”
I looked at him.
“And my life is complicated.”
Daniel laughed.
“Claire, I'm a surgeon. Complicated is my normal.”
I smiled.

For the first time in years, I allowed myself to imagine a future that wasn't defined by what Vincent had done.
A future I chose.
