Chapter 14 - THE MAN WHO FINALLY UNDERSTOOD LOVE

Vincent learned about Daniel from Emily.

She mentioned him casually during a visit.

“Daniel helped me build a volcano for science class.”

Vincent looked up.

“Daniel?”

“Mommy's friend.”

Vincent went still.

“Ah.”

Emily continued.

“He knows lots about bones.”

Vincent nodded.

“That's useful.”

She smiled.

“He's nice.”

Vincent looked away.

For a moment, jealousy rose.

Then he remembered the hospital.

Claire reaching for him.

His own hand pulling away.

He had forfeited the right to expect her life to remain frozen.

That evening, he called me.

“Emily mentioned Daniel.”

I stiffened.

“Yes.”

Vincent hesitated.

“Is he good to you?”

I stared.

“That's not your decision.”

“I know.”

He paused.

“I just hope he is.”

The sincerity surprised me.

“He is.”

Vincent was quiet.

Then said:

“Good.”

For the first time, he sounded like a man who genuinely wanted me to be happy.

Even if that happiness had nothing to do with him.

Over the following year, Vincent continued changing his life.

He withdrew from criminal leadership and addressed legal consequences through counsel.

He focused on legitimate business operations and strengthened oversight of his charitable foundation.

The foundation's educational awards were placed under independent selection committees to prevent favoritism.

He also began speaking less about being a successful father.

And spending more time actually being one.

When Emily won a regional science competition, he sat in the audience beside Lucas.

He didn't give a speech.

He didn't demand attention.

He simply stood and applauded.

And when Emily looked toward him, he smiled.

May you like

Not because she had made him look good.

Because he was proud of her.
