Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT MY PAST RETURNED

Nathan had always been charming.
It was his greatest talent.
He could convince a bartender to give him free drinks, a landlord to extend a deadline, and a woman who loved him to apologize for problems he had created.
Seeing him at the lake house reminded me how dangerous charm could become when separated from conscience.
"You're trespassing," Adrian said.
Nathan smiled.
"Technically, this property belongs to a holding company."
"Which one?"
"Northbridge."
I almost laughed.
"Of course."
Nathan turned toward me.
"You always did catch on quickly."
"Not quickly enough to avoid marrying you."
His smile tightened.
"We never married."
"One of my better financial decisions."
Adrian's security team positioned themselves near the house.
No one drew a weapon.
Nathan noticed.
"Relax. We're here to negotiate."
"What do you want?" Adrian asked.
"The box."
"Why?"
"Because certain documents belong to Raymond."
I stepped forward.
"Elena Vale's personal belongings don't belong to Raymond Keller."
Nathan looked at me.
"Claire, don't make this difficult."
"You said that when you packed your suitcase."
His face changed.
"That was different."
"Was it?"
He glanced at Adrian.
"You know she was fired for misconduct?"
Adrian said nothing.
Nathan continued.
"She destroyed confidential records. Made accusations she couldn't prove."
"Funny," I said. "That's exactly what Daniel Mercer told the disciplinary committee."
"Because it was true."
I felt the old humiliation rise.
For two years, I'd carried the shame of being publicly discredited.
Now I understood why.
They hadn't simply wanted me fired.
They'd wanted me permanently unbelievable.
"You helped him," I whispered.
Nathan didn't deny it.
He looked almost relieved.
"Claire, you were going to ruin everything."
"My career?"
"Our future."
"Whose future?"
He looked away.
That was answer enough.
Adrian stepped forward.
"Leave."
Nathan laughed.
"You think you can protect her forever?"
"No."
The answer surprised everyone.
Adrian continued.
"But I can make sure whatever happens next takes place in front of witnesses."
He lifted his phone.
Naomi Brooks was on the line.
Nathan's smile vanished.
Within minutes, the vehicles reversed down the driveway.
No violence.
No dramatic confrontation.
Just men realizing their intimidation had failed.
But before leaving, Nathan rolled down his window.
"Claire, ask Adrian what happened to Oliver Grant."
Then he drove away.
I turned toward Adrian.
His face had gone pale.
"Adrian?"
He didn't answer immediately.
"There's something I haven't told you."
My stomach dropped.
"About Oliver?"
"Yes."
I stared at him.
"What?"
Adrian looked toward the empty road.
"Oliver contacted me before he disappeared."
"And?"
"He said he had evidence against Raymond."
"Then why didn't you protect him?"
May you like
Adrian's silence lasted too long.
"Because I didn't believe him."
