Chapter 8 - THE SECRET BENEATH THE LAKE HOUSE

Elena Vale's recording lasted seventeen minutes.
By the end, none of us could speak.
She had discovered that Raymond Keller and Arthur Mercer, Daniel's father, were secretly using the Vale companies to finance fraudulent property acquisitions.
But the most devastating revelation concerned Adrian's father.
Vincent Vale had known.
Not everything.
Not the full scale.
But enough.
He'd agreed to conceal certain transactions because Raymond threatened to expose Vincent's own illegal dealings from years earlier.
Elena refused to participate.
She planned to report the fraud.
Then she received threats.
"Vincent says he can handle Raymond," her recorded voice said. "But he's afraid. I've never seen him afraid before."
Adrian sat motionless.
The recording continued.
"I don't know whether my husband will protect me when the time comes. But I know my children deserve something better than the life we've built."
Evelyn began crying.
Adrian closed his eyes.
I wanted to touch his hand.
I didn't.
Some grief needed room.
When the recording ended, Adrian walked outside.
I followed him to the porch.
He stood facing the lake.
"My father told me he spent his whole life protecting this family."
"Maybe he believed that."
"He let her die."
"We don't know exactly what happened."
"He knew she was in danger."
I couldn't argue.
Adrian gripped the railing.
"For years, I thought being stronger than him meant making everyone fear me."
"And now?"
He turned toward me.
"Now I don't know what strength looks like."
I stepped beside him.
"Maybe it looks like telling the truth even when it costs you something."
He watched me.
"You're going to lose your job again if this becomes public."
"Maybe."
"Your reputation could be dragged through another investigation."
"Probably."
"Then why are you still here?"
I thought about my father.
Oliver's family.
Elena's recording.
And the person I had been before Daniel Mercer taught me that truth could be expensive.
"Because I don't want fear making my decisions anymore."
Adrian's expression softened.
He reached for my hand.
Slowly.
Giving me time to pull away.
I didn't.
For several seconds, we stood together in silence.
Then headlights appeared at the end of the driveway.
Three vehicles.
No license plates visible.
Adrian immediately moved between me and the road.
"Evelyn!" he called. "Inside!"
The first vehicle stopped.
A man stepped out.
I recognized him instantly.
Nathan Cross.
My former fiancé smiled.
"Hello, Claire."
May you like
Then he looked at Adrian.
"Raymond would like his property back."
