Chapter 6 - THE PRICE OF PROTECTION

Adrian didn't ask whether I was frightened.

He could see it.

Within thirty minutes, my father was moved to a secure rehabilitation facility with his full consent, and Naomi Brooks was notified about the threatening photograph.

I insisted on that last part.

Adrian didn't object.

"You don't trust me," he said later.

We stood in his office overlooking the river.

"I don't trust anyone with enough power to make people disappear."

His jaw tightened.

"Fair."

"Are you angry?"

"At you? No."

"Then why do you look like that?"

"Because someone threatened your father to get to you."

I looked away.

"I should quit."

"You can."

The answer hurt unexpectedly.

"You'd let me walk away?"

"Claire, I won't turn your safety into a contract."

I stared at him.

"That's not what I expected."

"People rarely expect the truth from me."

He opened a drawer and removed an old photograph.

A young woman stood outside a neighborhood grocery store, smiling beneath a faded awning.

"My mother," he said.

"She's beautiful."

"She was."

I studied his face.

"What happened?"

"She kept the books for my father's business. She discovered money disappearing."

My chest tightened.

"Someone hurt her?"

"She died in a warehouse fire. The investigation called it an accident."

"Was it?"

"I don't know."

He placed the photograph down.

"My father died believing one of his partners arranged it. I inherited the company, his enemies, and a reputation I didn't entirely earn."

"Entirely?"

He looked at me.

"I've done things I'm not proud of."

I appreciated that he didn't pretend otherwise.

"Then why tell me?"

"Because you're deciding whether to trust me. You deserve the truth."

I looked at the photograph again.

"Who was your father's partner?"

Adrian hesitated.

"Raymond Keller."

My blood chilled.

The same man.

The same pattern.

A woman discovers missing money.

Then tragedy.

"Adrian," I whispered, "what if your mother wasn't the first?"

He frowned.

"What do you mean?"

I pulled up the historical records I'd been examining.

"Look at the companies Raymond has controlled. Every major asset transfer follows one of three events: a sudden loss, an executive resignation, or an unexplained death."

Adrian came closer.

I pointed to the screen.

"Your mother's warehouse fire happened six weeks before Raymond acquired a minority stake in the freight company."

His face went still.

I continued.

"Someone has been building an empire inside your empire for decades."

Adrian stared at the screen.

Then he said something I would never forget.

"I spent fifteen years believing my mother's death was the beginning of my father's downfall."

May you like

He looked at me.

"What if it was the beginning of Raymond's fortune?"
