Chapter 6 - WHAT DANIEL DID

The Raven Room was darker than Eleanor expected.
Black wood.
Low amber lights.
No ravens anywhere.
Arthur Vale sat alone.
He looked small.
That surprised her.
Power shrinks when removed from rooms designed to amplify it.
"You look like Daniel."
he said.
"That would concern my mother."
Vale smiled.
Then:
"Did Thomas give you everything?"
"Enough."
"No."
He leaned forward.
"Daniel wasn't investigating me because he was noble."
"I never said he was."
"He stole from me."
"How much?"
Vale studied her.
"Twenty million."
Eleanor's stomach tightened.
Daniel's records had unexplained offshore transfers.
She had assumed they were Vale's.
Vale continued.
"Daniel rerouted money to fund whistleblowers and informants."
"That's not theft from me."
"It was my money."
"Obtained how?"
Vale smiled.
There.
Dirty money.
Still stolen.
Both things could be true.
Then Vale revealed the deeper truth.
Daniel and Jonathan Harper eventually discovered Vale was using charities to move bribes.
They planned to expose him.
But Daniel became afraid.
Not for himself.
For Ethan.
Vale threatened the boy.
Eight years old.
Daniel backed down.
Jonathan did not.
Their friendship broke.
Daniel secretly moved money into accounts designed to compensate witnesses if anything happened.
Jonathan interpreted it as theft.
Vale fed that suspicion.
Project Raven collapsed.
Then Daniel decided to confess everything to federal authorities.
The night before his meeting—
he died.
Eleanor's voice stayed steady.
"You killed him."
Vale smiled.
"No."
"Who?"
"Nolan's father."
Pierce.
The family business.
Vale claimed the elder Pierce tampered with Daniel's medication during the gala Daniel attended that night.
A stimulant.
A heart-rhythm drug.
Then Daniel drove.
His heart failed.
Car crashed.
Vale never touched him.
Coward's definition of innocence.
"Jonathan?"
Eleanor asked.
Vale looked away.
"Also Pierce."
"And Claire?"
"Claire is unfortunate."
"She could have died."
"I told Nolan to frighten her."
"You ordered a trap on marble stairs."
Vale shrugged slightly.
"Young men improvise."
Eleanor felt sick.
Then:
"Why now?"
Vale's expression changed.
"Because Daniel's money moved."
"What?"
"Three months ago."
One of the old accounts Daniel created had finally activated.
Someone accessed it.
Vale assumed Thomas.
Wrong.
Eleanor knew immediately.
Ethan.
Without knowing what it was.
Three months earlier, Ethan had consolidated dormant family accounts before his wedding.
One transfer had triggered surveillance Vale had maintained for decades.
Ethan had unknowingly awakened Project Raven.
That was why Claire's engagement mattered.
Not because she was a Harper.
Because the wedding caused financial restructuring.
Vale stood.
"Give me Daniel's files."
"No."
"Then your son pays for his father's mistakes."
Eleanor smiled.
Arthur frowned.
"What?"
She touched the small microphone hidden under her brooch.
"Thank you."
Vale went pale.
Federal agents entered.
Not dramatically.
Professionally.
Warrants.
Financial-crime charges.
Conspiracy.
Obstruction.
Evidence tied to Nolan.
Vale stared at Eleanor.
"You think this ends anything?"
"No."
She stood.
May you like
"I think it begins your turn to answer questions."
