Chapter 5 - THE BLACK RAVEN ROOM

Arthur Vale owned a private club beneath one of his Midtown hotels.

Invitation only.

No signs.

No public membership list.

Daniel's files referenced it repeatedly.

RAVEN ROOM.

Eleanor had believed it metaphorical.

It wasn't.

Detective Bennett obtained warrants after financial evidence connected the fake waiter to a Vale-owned staffing subcontractor.

The waiter was identified.

Nolan Pierce.

Former private-security contractor.

Worked for Vale Risk Advisory.

He disappeared.

His apartment was empty.

Phone destroyed.

But his storage unit contained uniforms, cloned badges—

and photographs of Eleanor.

Ethan.

Claire.

Margaret.

Thomas.

Every person connected to old Project Raven.

This wasn't about a wedding.

It was cleanup.

Arthur Vale knew Daniel's files had survived.

He did not know who had them.

By creating public conflict inside the Whitmore family, he could pressure them into exposing old records.

And it worked.

Thomas brought the files out.

Eleanor said:

"We did exactly what he wanted."

Detective Bennett nodded.

"So now we decide what he sees."

They created a controlled leak.

A false rumor that Thomas had hidden the original Project Raven ledger in the Whitmore family vault.

There was no such ledger.

Within twenty-four hours, someone broke into the old Whitmore estate.

Security caught the intruder.

Nolan Pierce.

Alive.

He requested an attorney immediately.

Smart.

But his phone contained enough.

Messages from a contact named A.V.

No full name.

Yet.

Instructions:

Make Claire believe Eleanor is the obstacle.

Push the family apart before Avery returns.

Recover originals.

Then one:

If necessary, recreate Daniel's accident.

Ethan stared.

"My mother?"

Detective Bennett answered:

"Or you."

The investigation escalated.

Federal agents entered because Project Raven involved interstate financial crimes stretching back decades.

Arthur Vale publicly denied everything.

Then called Eleanor personally.

She answered.

"Eleanor."

His voice was old.

Smooth.

"You always were difficult."

She smiled.

"And you always mistook age for immunity."

He laughed.

"You think Daniel was innocent?"

"No."

That stopped him.

"I think my husband made mistakes."

Then:

"But unlike you, he died before he could answer for them."

Vale's voice cooled.

"You have no idea what he did."

"Then tell me."

Silence.

"Come alone."

"Where?"

"The Raven Room."

Eleanor agreed.

Ethan exploded when he learned.

"No."

She looked at him.

"I'm seventy."

"Exactly."

"That is not the argument you think it is."

"I'm going."

"No."

Detective Bennett intervened.

"Eleanor won't actually be alone."

Ethan stared.

A wire.

Surveillance.

Federal team.

Controlled meeting.

Eleanor looked at her son.

"Your father spent his life trying to protect me from information."

She picked up her coat.

May you like

"I'm done being protected that way."
