Chapter 9 - THE AWARD DANIEL REPLACED

Carter Financial never replaced the broken trophy.

Daniel refused.

Instead, one year after Maria’s injury, the company opened a worker-safety review center on the twenty-seventh floor.

Not named after Maria.

Her condition.

“No statues either.”

“Was not planning statues.”

“You’re rich. You people do strange things.”

Fair.

The center handled contractor complaints independently from procurement.

Anonymous reporting.

Injury documentation.

Wage audits.

Direct access to outside counsel.

Maria joined its advisory board.

Paid.

At market rate.

Through a contract reviewed by independent counsel.

She enjoyed correcting Daniel’s proposals.

He claimed this was abuse.

Nobody agreed.

At the first annual review, Carter Financial discovered three smaller contractor issues before they became scandals.

One involved meal-break violations.

One involved unsafe loading schedules.

One involved payroll rounding.

Daniel felt strangely proud of boring problems found early.

Maria said:

“That’s what functioning systems look like.”

“Unexciting?”

“Yes.”

“I built a financial empire for this?”

“For lunch breaks.”

He laughed.

Sophia, now twelve, occasionally came to events.

She still remembered the empty breakfast conversation.

One evening Daniel asked her:

“Do you remember calling your mom that night?”

“Yes.”

“Were you scared?”

Sophia shrugged.

“A little.”

“Why didn't you tell anyone else?”

“Who?”

Good question.

There had been nobody.

Daniel understood why that bothered him.

Poverty is sometimes described as not having money.

Often it is also not having a backup person.

No spare adult.

No emergency fridge.

No second car.

No margin.

He could not solve that for every family.

May you like

But he could stop companies from exploiting the absence of margin.

That was something.
