Chapter 8 - MARIA QUIT CLEANING FOR GOOD

Eight months after the broken trophy, Maria completed her certificate.

Not because Daniel arranged it.

Because she attended classes after work.

Studied at laundromats.

Studied while Sophia slept.

Studied on buses.

Daniel knew only because Sophia emailed him a photograph.

Subject:

MOM PASSED

Maria discovered this thirty minutes later.

She called.

“My daughter has your email?”

“She guessed.”

“How?”

“My company email is literally my name.”

“You need better security.”

“Possibly.”

Maria sighed.

“Don't make this weird.”

“I wasn't planning to.”

“No giant flowers.”

“Fine.”

“No job offer.”

Daniel stopped.

She heard.

“You were thinking about it.”

“Yes.”

“Don't.”

“Okay.”

He sent one thing.

A handwritten card.

You earned this. Congratulations. — Daniel

No check.

No contact card.

No favor attached.

Maria kept it.

She took a facilities-compliance job with another company.

Better hours.

Daytime schedule.

Benefits.

Sophia stopped eating dinner alone four nights a week.

That mattered more than salary.

Only after Maria had been gone from Carter Financial’s contractor ecosystem for six months did Daniel ask her to dinner.

He still did it badly.

“Dinner Friday?”

Maria stared at him across a coffee shop where they had met because she was helping Rachel with a worker-safety advisory panel.

“That sounds like a meeting.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I've been told I have this problem.”

“By whom?”

“Everyone.”

He tried again.

“Would you have dinner with me Friday?”

“Why?”

He looked at her.

“Because I like you.”

Maria smiled.

“Better.”

“And because I have been deliberately not asking for six months.”

“That sounds painfully disciplined.”

“It has been miserable.”

She laughed.

“Yes.”

Their first date was at a neighborhood Mexican restaurant Maria chose.

Daniel did not own it.

She checked.

No private dining room.

No chauffeur waiting at the entrance.

Daniel’s security remained across the street because billionaire reality still existed.

They talked about Rosa.

Sophia.

Maria’s ex-husband, who had left when Sophia was four and resurfaced only occasionally.

Daniel did not insult him.

Maria appreciated that.

At the end of dinner, Daniel asked:

“Can I kiss you?”

Maria smiled.

“You ask permission now.”

“I am apparently teachable.”

“Sometimes.”

“Yes?”

“Yes.”

The kiss was gentle.

No city lights exploding.

No grand speech.

Just two adults who had finally reached a place where neither controlled the other’s paycheck.

That mattered more than romance usually admitted.
