Chapter 7 - COLIN REEVES WASN’T THE WORST ONE

Colin took a plea deal first.
He admitted instructing workers to clock out before completing assigned floors.
Admitted suppressing accident reports.
Admitted retaliating against employees who refused excess assignments.
Then he gave prosecutors Victor.
His uncle.
Victor Reeves had built BrightLine’s profit model around “labor elasticity.”
Translated:
Hire fewer people than billed.
Make remaining people complete the work.
Hide injuries.
Replace anyone who complains.
Nathan Cole made it possible inside Carter.
Victor made it profitable outside.
Records showed BrightLine used the same model in hospitals, law firms and two luxury hotels.
The case expanded.
Maria attended one hearing.
Only one.
Afterward Daniel found her outside the courthouse.
“You okay?”
“No.”
Honest.
“What happened?”
“Colin apologized.”
Daniel waited.
Maria laughed bitterly.
“He said he was under pressure from Victor.”
“Do you believe him?”
“Yes.”
That surprised Daniel.
“Does that matter?”
“No.”
Exactly.
Pressure explained.
Did not erase.
Maria looked toward the courthouse.
“For years I thought men like Colin were powerful.”
“And now?”
“He was just standing one level above me getting scared by somebody one level above him.”
Daniel looked at her.
“And Victor?”
“Probably scared of money.”
She smiled sadly.
“Everybody serves something.”
“What do I serve?”
Maria looked directly at him.
“Control.”
Daniel said nothing.
Then she added:
“Less than before.”
Progress.
Nathan later pleaded guilty to fraud and kickback-related charges.
Victor faced a broader prosecution.
BrightLine entered bankruptcy.
Carter Financial paid back wages immediately rather than waiting for years of litigation, then pursued recovery from BrightLine’s assets and insurers.
Daniel insisted.
Rachel made it legally survivable.
They had developed a system.
Maria received:
Back wages.
Overtime.
Injury compensation.
Statutory penalties.
No secret settlement.
No nondisclosure clause.
No gratitude required.
She used part of the money to clear rent arrears.
Part for Sophia’s school expenses.
Then enrolled in a facilities-management certification program.
Daniel learned accidentally.

He did not offer tuition.
