Chapter 8 - THE VIDEO CLAIRE WANTED THE WORLD TO SEE

The cake footage became public.
Not the hidden-camera version.
Guest phones.
Several people had recorded the moment.
Someone sold it to a gossip site.
Mara woke to millions of views.
Headlines:

CLAIRE WHITMORE CAKE ATTACK CAUGHT ON VIDEO
Mara wanted every copy erased.
Impossible.
Lily's face existed online now.
Crying.
Covered in frosting.
Andrew nearly lost control when he saw it.
“Take it down.”
“The internet doesn't work that way,” Mara said.
“Our lawyers—”
“Can request.”
“They'll comply.”
“Some will.”
He looked ready to declare war on every social-media platform.
Mara touched his arm.
“Andrew.”
He stopped.
“We help Lily.”
Not fix internet.
Help child.
They found a therapist specializing in childhood stress.
Lily asked practical questions.
Would children at school laugh?
Maybe.
What should she say?
Whatever she wanted.
Could she tell them Aunt Claire was arrested?
Mara suggested discussing less legal detail in third grade.
Lily disagreed.
Then something unexpected happened.
The hidden-camera recording was introduced in court.
Claire's own device.
Her plan.
Her instructions.
The footage intended to prove Mara unstable instead proved premeditation.
Theo sat beside Mara afterward.
“Poetic.”
“Don't become sentimental.”
“Wouldn't dream of it.”
The employee whose fist Mara saw close around the camera had saved them.
But Theo corrected her.
“You saved yourself.”
“I didn't find the camera.”
“No.”
“You didn't throw the cake either.”
Mara looked at him.
He continued.
“You chose not to give Claire the reaction she designed.”
That mattered.
Mara had spent weeks thinking the story turned because Theo found the device.
Maybe it turned one second earlier.
When she chose Lily over rage.
At the board meeting, Mara used Lily's seventeen percent.
Andrew did not vote for her.
Did not instruct her.
He sat beside counsel.
Mara voted against the North Meridian transaction.
Then supported an independent forensic audit.
Several board members looked horrified.
Andrew looked proud.
She gave him a warning glance.
He immediately neutralized his face.
Better.
The audit uncovered years of related-party deals involving Claire and Malcolm.
Not everything was criminal.
Some merely unethical.
Some stupid.
Some both.
Whitmore Holdings survived.
Smaller.
Cleaner.
Andrew stepped down temporarily as CEO during the investigation.
Nobody expected that.
Including Mara.
“Why?”
“Because the company spent years treating the family as if our name made oversight optional.”
He shrugged.
“I helped create that culture.”
“Will you go back?”
“Maybe.”
“What will you do?”
Andrew looked toward Lily, who was building a cardboard hotel on the floor.
“I might learn how to be bored.”
May you like
Mara smiled.
“Good luck.”
