Chapter 6 - THE SISTER WHO THOUGHT BLOOD MEANT OWNERSHIP

Claire was arrested Sunday morning.
Not for cake.
Not yet for Andrew's confinement.
Initially:
Fraud.
Conspiracy.
Attempted securities manipulation.
Malcolm Voss was arrested two hours later.
Dr. Mercer lost access to the clinic and faced separate charges related to false medical documentation and unlawful confinement.
Peter Vale talked first.
Of course he did.
Men who build careers on loyalty sometimes discover self-preservation remarkably quickly.
He described the plan.
Andrew had uncovered North Meridian.
Claire's shell buyer.
He planned to stop the hotel sale.
Peter lured him to the warehouse.
The original plan had been simple:
Keep Andrew unavailable.
Make his absence look voluntary.
Leak financial documents suggesting he had fled.
Push Mara emotionally.
Use Lily's birthday to create public evidence of instability.
Request temporary guardianship.
Take control of Lily's voting shares.
Approve the hotel transfer.
Then Andrew would “reappear.”
Mara stared at the investigator.
“They were going to let him go?”
“According to Vale.”
“When?”
“After the assets transferred.”
“And explain nine days of imprisonment how?”
“Private breakdown. Voluntary treatment.”
Of course.
Andrew's own reputation for secrecy would've helped sell it.
Mara asked:
“What if I hadn't reacted to the cake?”
The investigator looked uncomfortable.
“Ms. Whitmore apparently had alternatives.”
“What alternatives?”
“Allegations regarding alcohol.”
Mara laughed.
She barely drank.
“Prescription abuse.”
None.
“Neglect.”
Mara's face hardened.
Claire had prepared stories for every outcome.
Not truth.
Options.
The cake had simply been the cleanest.
At the preliminary hearing, Claire saw Mara across the courthouse corridor.
She smiled.
Actually smiled.
“Mara.”
Theo moved slightly closer.
Mara stopped him.
Claire said:
“You look tired.”
“My husband was kidnapped.”
Claire's smile disappeared.
“My brother was receiving treatment.”
“Against his will.”
“He wasn't himself.”
“He was himself enough to tell you he'd destroy your plan.”
Claire's face tightened.
Then:
“You've always enjoyed turning him against us.”
There.
Not greed alone.
Resentment.
Mara studied her.
“You really believe that.”
“You came into this family with nothing.”
Mara almost smiled.
“College degree. Career. Apartment.”
“You know what I mean.”
“Yes.”
Money.
Name.
Family mythology.
Claire continued.
“Andrew stopped listening after he married you.”
“No.”
Mara shook her head.
“He started questioning you.”
“Same thing.”
That sentence told Mara everything.
Claire did not love her brother as a person.
She loved a version of him that maintained the system.
“Why the cake?”
Claire's expression flickered.
“You wouldn't understand.”
“Try.”
Claire looked toward the courtroom.
“Because I needed everyone to see what you really were.”
Mara waited.
“And what am I?”
Claire's gaze hardened.
“Angry.”
Mara smiled.
“Yes.”
Claire blinked.
“I am furious.”
Mara stepped closer.
“But anger isn't insanity.”
Claire said nothing.
“Anger is what happens when someone throws a cake at your child and kidnaps your husband for voting shares.”
Theo almost smiled behind her.
Mara continued:
“You made one mistake.”
“What?”
“You thought because I was angry, I would become careless.”
Claire's expression changed.
Mara turned away.
Then stopped.
“One more thing.”
Claire waited.
“Lily asked why you did it.”
For the first time, something uncertain moved through Claire's face.
“What did you tell her?”
“The truth.”
Claire swallowed.
“What truth?”
“That adults sometimes hurt children because they are trying to control other adults.”
Mara held her gaze.
May you like
“And that it was never her fault.”
Then she walked into court.
