Chapter 3 - THE PLACE WHERE ANDREW WASN'T SUPPOSED TO EXIST

They did not drive to Mercer House.

Mara wanted to.

Theo refused.

Not because he thought she was fragile.

Because he had finally learned how to explain instead of command.

“If Andrew is there and Claire has people watching, they move him the second they see us.”

“What do we do?”

“Get proof first.”

Mara hated it.

He was right.

Mercer House described itself online as an executive neurological rehabilitation center.

Private suites.

Twenty-four-hour physicians.

No public patient directory.

Owned through a subsidiary of Whitmore Health Properties.

The medical director:

Dr. Simon Mercer.

Mara recognized the name.

He had attended Christmas at Claire's house.

Twice.

He had once examined Lily's scraped knee after she fell near the swimming pool.

Mara felt sick.

Rachel sat beside her.

“Can you call?”

Theo shook his head.

“They'll deny Andrew is there.”

“Then who can see records?”

Mara thought.

“Insurance.”

Both looked at her.

“Andrew's health insurance.”

Theo frowned.

“If he's being treated under his own name.”

“He wouldn't be.”

“No.”

Mara stood.

“But Whitmore self-insures senior executives.”

Theo understood.

The company paid high-level medical claims through an internal benefits administrator.

If someone had billed medication, imaging, or private nursing—

there could be a financial trail.

Mara knew who ran benefits.

Janice Holloway.

Fifty-eight.

Had worked for Whitmore longer than Andrew.

Loved Lily.

Hated Claire.

Worth trying.

Janice agreed to meet in a grocery-store parking lot.

Very glamorous.

She looked terrified.

“Mara.”

“Have you seen Andrew's name?”

“No.”

“Any unusual executive medical expenses?”

Janice swallowed.

“I shouldn't—”

“My husband may be held somewhere against his will.”

That did it.

Janice opened her laptop.

She didn't give them direct protected medical information.

She showed them something more basic.

A cost center.

Private recovery services.

Patient coded:

A-17.

Authorized nine days earlier.

By Malcolm Voss.

Facility:

Mercer House.

Mara's hands shook.

“Can we prove A-17 is Andrew?”

Janice looked around.

Then whispered:

“The billing authorization lists his employee insurance classification.”

Only one person at Whitmore Holdings had that classification.

The CEO.

Andrew.

Mara closed her eyes.

Alive.

At least nine days ago.

Alive.

Theo immediately sent the evidence to an outside attorney Andrew had retained before disappearing.

Then to law enforcement.

Not Whitmore security.

Not family attorneys.

Independent.

Mara expected police to break down Mercer House's doors within minutes.

Reality was less satisfying.

Lawyers.

Probable cause.

Jurisdiction.

Verification.

Hours.

Mara paced Rachel's apartment until midnight.

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

No voice.

Only breathing.

“Mara?”

Nothing.

“Andrew?”

A faint sound.

Then a man whispered:

“Don't go to Mercer.”

Mara froze.

“Who is this?”

“Your husband isn't there anymore.”

Theo stood instantly.

“Who?”

The caller continued.

“They moved him after the ballroom.”

Mara's blood went cold.

“How do you know?”

“Because I drove the ambulance.”

Then the call ended.

Theo tried tracing it.

Burner.

But the sentence mattered.

They moved him.

After the ballroom.

Claire knew her plan had failed.

Mara looked at Theo.

“If they moved him because I didn't react—”

“No.”

“Don't.”

He stopped.

She continued.

“I want the truth.”

“The truth is we don't know why they moved him.”

“But the timing.”

“Yes.”

Mara walked toward the window.

Her daughter slept in the next room.

Her husband had been alive.

Drugged.

Moved.

All because seventeen percent of voting stock vested in an eight-year-old.

Money had never felt so disgusting.

Theo's phone vibrated.

He read.

“What?”

“The device uploaded before I removed it.”

Mara turned.

“To where?”

“Private server.”

“Whose?”

Theo looked at her.

“Claire's law firm.”

There was more.

He scrolled.

A scheduled file.

Emergency guardianship petition.

Already drafted.

Mara's name.

Lily's name.

Supporting allegation:

Mara Whitmore displayed violent instability during a child's birthday celebration and physically threatened members of the Whitmore family.

Mara laughed.

Quietly.

Theo looked concerned.

“I'm fine.”

She read further.

Attached witness list.

Twenty-three names.

People Claire apparently expected to support the story.

Then Mara saw one name that stopped her.

Margaret Whitmore.

Andrew and Claire's mother.

The woman who had hugged Lily before the party.

The woman who told Mara:

“Whatever happens, we're family.”

May you like

Mara stared at the screen.

“His mother knew.”
