Chapter 8 - THE PARTNER WHO BETRAYED MY FATHER

Marianne arranged for an independent forensic team to examine the second archive.

We didn't open it on an ordinary laptop.

The specialists created verified copies and reviewed the material in a controlled environment.

I watched as file after file appeared.

Shipping contracts.

Financial statements.

Internal correspondence.

And a series of recordings my father had made during meetings with Victor Vale.

One recording was dated twelve days before his death.

Victor's voice was unmistakable.

"Alexander, you're making this bigger than it needs to be."

My father's voice answered.

"Your company moved money through false invoices."

Victor sighed.

"Those arrangements were approved years ago."

"Not by me."

Silence.

Then Victor said:

"If you go public, you won't be the only one who suffers."

My father's voice hardened.

"Are you threatening my daughter?"

Victor didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"I'm reminding you that families have vulnerabilities."

I felt sick.

Marianne paused the recording.

"Elena."

I stared at the screen.

"My father knew."

She nodded.

"He was trying to protect you."

I looked down.

For eleven months, I'd believed my father died before finishing his investigation.

Now I understood that he'd been much closer to exposing the truth than anyone realized.

The archive also contained records showing that Vale International had diverted funds from a joint maritime investment program.

Some payments appeared connected to shell companies.

Others suggested bribery and procurement fraud.

But the most disturbing files involved a charitable maritime safety foundation.

The foundation was supposed to fund rescue equipment and training for coastal communities.

Instead, millions had been transferred into accounts controlled by Vale associates.

Money meant to save lives had been stolen.

And my father had discovered it.
