Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN CASSANDRA HUMILIATED

Cassandra Vale threw champagne in my face during a livestream, then ripped my silk dress while thousands of people watched. She thought she could humiliate me and have me thrown off the luxury yacht, but the captain's arrival was about to change everything. What she didn't know was that the most shocking secret of the night had nothing to do with my ruined dress.

My name is Elena Marlowe, and the day Cassandra Vale underestimated me was the day she destroyed herself.

Champagne dripped from my chin.

My ivory silk dress was soaked.

And Cassandra was laughing.

"Oh my God," she said, holding her phone toward my face. "Did everyone see that?"

A tiny red icon glowed on her screen.

She was live.

Thousands of people were watching.

The guests around us laughed.

Not everyone.

But enough.

I stood on the upper deck of the Étoile, beneath the Monaco night sky, while Cassandra smiled into her camera.

She looked flawless.

Silver dress. Diamond earrings. Perfectly arranged hair.

I had committed one terrible offense.

I'd walked through the edge of her photograph.

That was all.

She had spent twenty minutes photographing herself against the Monte Carlo harbor lights.

And apparently, someone like me had no right to ruin her perfect moment.

"There," she said, lowering her empty champagne glass. "Now we're even."

I closed my eyes.

Cold liquid slipped beneath my hair and soaked into my dress.

For one moment, I remembered something my father had taught me.

Power is easiest to misuse when you're angry, Elena.

I opened my eyes.

"Are you finished?" I asked.

My calm voice seemed to confuse her.

She had expected tears.

Perhaps screaming.

Instead, I took a napkin from a nearby table and wiped my face.

Her smile faltered.

"Don't act superior."

"I'm not acting."

That was when she lost control.

Cassandra stepped toward me and grabbed the silk at my waist.

"Look at her," she announced to her livestream. "Girls like this come to Monaco, sneak onto private yachts, and suddenly think they're somebody."

A young man behind her warned her.

"Cassandra."

She ignored him.

"Let go of my dress," I said.

"Or what?"

I looked directly at her.

"Cassandra."

She pulled.

RIP.

The sound cut through the music.

The seam tore along my side.

I caught the fabric before it fell open.

The guests went silent.

Even Cassandra looked startled.

But only for a moment.

Then she smiled again.

"Oops."

She raised her phone closer.

"Girls like this should never be allowed near luxury."

Something inside me went cold.

Not anger.

Something quieter.

I looked around the deck.

The polished teak.

The brass railings.

The cream leather seating.

And the discreet silver star embedded in the floor beside the staircase.

My father had designed that emblem twenty-three years earlier.

I knew exactly what it represented.

Cassandra didn't.

She had spent the evening telling everyone that the Étoile was practically her family's yacht.

I could have corrected her.

One sentence would have been enough.

But I remained silent.

Then footsteps sounded behind us.

Slow.

Measured.

Captain Adrien Laurent appeared on the upper deck.

He had commanded vessels for my father long before I finished university.

His eyes moved from Cassandra's empty champagne glass to my wet hair.

Then to the torn silk I was holding against my side.

His expression changed.

"Captain!" Cassandra called brightly.

She turned her livestream toward him.

"Perfect timing. This woman somehow got onto the yacht, and she's causing a scene."

Adrien looked directly at me.

I gave him the smallest shake of my head.

Not yet.

His jaw tightened.

Cassandra mistook his silence for agreement.

"Please have security remove her."

The captain walked toward us.

The guests stepped aside.

Cassandra smiled triumphantly and angled her phone to capture what she thought would be my final humiliation.

But Adrien didn't approach her.

He stopped directly in front of me.

Then he did something I hadn't expected.

He dropped to one knee.

The entire deck froze.

"Miss Marlowe," he said, his voice carrying across the suddenly silent yacht. "Please forgive me."

Cassandra lowered her phone slightly.

"What?"

Adrien kept his eyes on me.

"I promised your father that no guest aboard this vessel would ever be permitted to threaten your safety."

A murmur moved through the crowd.

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Captain, please stand."

He did.

But his expression remained grave.

"I should have intervened sooner."

Cassandra laughed.

It was a thin, uncertain sound.

"Your father? What is this supposed to be? Some kind of performance?"

Adrien turned toward her.

"Miss Vale, you are speaking to Elena Marlowe."

"I know her name."

"Then perhaps you should also know that she is the controlling shareholder of Marlowe Maritime Holdings."

Cassandra blinked.

"So?"

Adrien's voice hardened.

"Marlowe Maritime owns this vessel."

The silence that followed was extraordinary.

Somewhere near the bar, a glass struck the floor.

Cassandra stared at me.

Then at the captain.

Then back at me.

"That's impossible."

I finally released the napkin.

"No," I said quietly. "It isn't."

Her phone remained pointed toward my face.

The livestream continued.

And I knew that somewhere, thousands of strangers had just watched a wealthy woman discover she'd assaulted the owner of the yacht on which she was standing.

But the worst part of the evening was still ahead.

Because Adrien leaned toward me and whispered something that made the blood leave my face.

"Miss Marlowe, your father's private safe was opened twenty minutes ago."

I looked at him.

"What?"

His expression darkened.

"The person who accessed it used your credentials."

I went completely still.

May you like

My father had been dead for eleven months.

And the safe Adrien was talking about contained the one document that could destroy the Vale family's empire.
