Chapter 14 - THE NIGHT I RETURNED TO THE ÉTOILE

One year after the incident, I returned to the Étoile.
Not for a party.
For a ceremony.
Marlowe Maritime had established a new independent maritime safety fund.
Its first grants supported rescue training, emergency equipment, and coastal education programs.
We invited volunteers.
Engineers.
Teachers.
Harbor workers.
And families whose communities would benefit.
No influencers were hired to promote the event.
No celebrity guest list was released.
The evening belonged to the people doing the work.
Adrien met me at the gangway.
"Welcome aboard, Miss Marlowe."
I smiled.
"Thank you, Captain."
He looked at my dress.
Dark green.
Simple.
Comfortable.
"Beautiful evening."
I laughed.
"Much better than the last one."
His expression softened.
"I'm glad."
I stepped onto the deck.
The silver star gleamed beneath the lights.
For a moment, I remembered Cassandra's laughter.
The champagne.
The tearing silk.
The humiliation.
Then I looked around.
Children were examining model rescue boats.
Volunteers were talking with engineers.
A young woman was explaining a new training program to her parents.
The yacht felt different.
Not because the furniture had changed.
Because its purpose had.
Lucas stood near the railing.
When he saw me, he smiled.
"You made it."
I laughed.
"It's my yacht."
He grinned.
"Fair point."
He handed me a small envelope.
"What's this?"
"Open it."
Inside was a photograph.
My father.
Standing beside a rescue vessel twenty years earlier.
He was shaking hands with a much younger man.
Lucas's father.
I stared.
"Where did you get this?"
Lucas smiled.
"My dad worked on one of your father's early safety projects."
My eyes filled.
"He never told me."
"He didn't know we knew each other until I mentioned your name."
I looked at the photograph.
My father was laughing.
Happy.
Alive.
For a moment, I felt him close again.
May you like
Lucas took my hand.
And I let him.
