Chapter 6 - THE FATHER WHO BUILT AN EMPIRE ON LIES

Charles Mercer was seventy-two.
He lived in a mansion overlooking Lake Michigan.
His name appeared on hospitals, universities, and charitable foundations.
For decades, he had been praised as a visionary businessman.
Roman confronted him in the family library.
I wasn't there.
But Roman later told me what happened.
He placed a copy of the recording on the desk.
Charles watched it without speaking.
When it ended, he leaned back.
"Where did you get this?"
Roman's expression remained cold.
"Daniel Vaughn."
Charles laughed.
"That mechanic?"
Roman's jaw tightened.
"That mechanic saved my life."
Charles waved a hand.
"He was an employee."
"He was a human being."
Charles looked up sharply.
"Watch your tone."
Roman didn't move.
"Seven people died," Roman said.
His father looked away.
"You knew the safety systems were disabled."
Silence.
"Why?"
Charles sighed.
"The company was collapsing. We needed the insurance money."
Roman stared.
"So you risked people's lives?"
Charles's expression hardened.
"I never intended anyone to die."
Roman stepped closer.
"But they did."
For the first time, Charles looked old.
Roman continued.
"And you blamed Daniel."
Charles didn't answer.
"Did you threaten him?"
Silence.
Roman closed his eyes.
Then whispered, "You destroyed his life."
Charles looked up.
"I built this empire for you."
Roman shook his head.
"No."
He turned toward the door.
May you like
"You built it for yourself."
And for the first time in his life, Roman Mercer walked away from his father's approval.
