Chapter 1 - The Pillow Beneath the Gown

THE BALLROOM CELEBRATED THE FUTURE MORETTI HEIR—UNTIL A HOUSEKEEPER’S THREE-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER EXPOSED THE PREGNANCY WITH SIX WORDS.

“I’m carrying your child.”

Vanessa Cole delivered the announcement beneath twelve glittering chandeliers.

Three hundred guests rose immediately.

Politicians applauded.

Judges raised their glasses.

Men feared across the country toasted the unborn heir to Alessandro Moretti’s empire.

Then my daughter tugged at my uniform.

“Mama… her tummy is a pillow.”

The applause died.

Vanessa’s hand tightened over her stomach.

I pulled Emma behind me, but Alessandro had already heard her.

“What did you say?” he asked.

Emma pointed innocently.

“I saw the pretty lady take it off upstairs.”

Vanessa laughed.

Too quickly.

“She’s three years old. She doesn’t understand what she saw.”

Alessandro did not answer.

He simply watched her.

For three years, I had worked inside his mansion.

I knew that silence.

It meant he had found the first crack in someone’s lie.

“Search Vanessa’s room,” he ordered.

Her face lost all color.

“No.”

That single word made every guard turn toward her.

Vanessa moved toward the staircase, but Emma opened her tiny hand.

Inside was a silver clasp she had found near the dressing room mirror.

Alessandro took it.

Engraved on the back was the name of a private fertility clinic.

And beneath that name was a patient number belonging to someone standing in the ballroom.

Someone who had been told she could never have children.

Alessandro slowly looked at me.

Why was the housekeeper’s medical identity connected to Vanessa’s fake pregnancy?

The answer began with a fertility clinic I had not entered in four years.
