Chapter 9 - The Hidden Accounts

Damian began examining his companies from the ground up.
He had originally believed his empire was threatened by outside rivals. Now he discovered that the deeper danger was inside his own organization.
Fourteen million dollars had been moved through a network of private holding companies. The transfers had been approved by senior accountants, routed through two shipping subsidiaries, and concealed beneath legitimate operating expenses.
The same accounts had been used to pay for private travel, personal security, and gifts to people who believed the money belonged to the company.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Victor Moretti.
Damian's uncle had helped build the family business. He had also spent years treating its employees as expendable and its money as a private inheritance.
When Damian confronted him, Victor leaned back in his chair.
"You're destroying your own house because your wife left you."
Damian placed the ledger on the desk.
"Fourteen million dollars is missing."
"Money moves."
"From the employee injury fund."
Victor shrugged.
"Those accounts are complicated."
"Not anymore."
Victor studied him.
"You've become sentimental."
"No. I've become interested in facts."
"Your father would be ashamed of you."
"My father is dead. The employees whose benefits you stole are not."
Victor's expression hardened.
"You think you can turn this family into a respectable business because you feel guilty about a dead child?"
Damian's hands curled into fists.
For one moment, violence seemed easier than the truth.
Then he remembered Claire's letter.
I hope you become the man Gabriel deserved to have as a father.
He stepped away from the desk.
"I'm giving the records to independent auditors and federal investigators."
Victor stared at him.
"You wouldn't dare."
"I already have."
Damian had provided the records through his attorney. The investigation would expose financial crimes and potentially implicate people who had served him for years.
He knew what that meant.
Some would turn against him. Some would attempt to flee. Others might try to destroy evidence.
He arranged for employees who had reported irregularities to receive legal protection. He separated the legitimate shipping companies from the businesses connected to criminal activity and began cooperating with authorities investigating the latter.
The process was neither clean nor painless.
Damian was not suddenly an innocent man. He had profited from an empire built on intimidation, illegal agreements, and fear.
But he could choose what happened next.
That night, he returned to the nursery and removed the final boxes.
He kept only the blue socks and the fourteen-second video.
Then he called Vincent.
"I want a complete list of everyone who worked for us and lost benefits because of those accounts."
"That will take time."
"Then take the time."
"And after that?"
"We pay what we owe, wherever the law allows it. Through proper channels. No secret funds, no favors, no conditions."
Vincent was silent.
"You really mean it."
May you like
Damian looked at the empty crib.
"I should have meant it years ago."
