Chapter 11 - The Cost of Changing

Damian's cooperation with investigators cost him more than money.
Several associates withdrew their support. Two executives resigned. Victor Moretti was charged in connection with the financial scheme, and investigators began examining other parts of the family's operations.
Damian faced scrutiny over his own conduct.
His lawyers advised him to make no public statements beyond what was required.
For once, he listened.
He stopped using his security team to resolve personal disputes. He began transferring control of legitimate companies to independent management and cooperated with investigations into the criminal operations that had enriched him.
The changes were slow, difficult, and incomplete.
Some people called him a coward.
Others called him a traitor.
Damian discovered that he could survive both accusations without ordering anyone to silence them.
He also discovered that remorse did not make him a better man by itself.
He had to become better through repeated decisions, especially when no one was watching.
On the anniversary of Gabriel's birth, he visited the hospital chapel.
He carried no bodyguards inside.
He sat in the last row and watched sunlight move across the polished floor.
"I don't know if you would have liked me," he whispered.
His voice sounded unfamiliar in the quiet room.
"I don't know what kind of father I would have been."
He closed his eyes.
"I wanted to believe I could provide everything you needed. A home, money, safety. I thought those things would make me enough."
A nurse walked past the open doorway.
Damian waited until her footsteps faded.
"I was wrong."
He placed a small white flower beside the chapel's memorial book and left.
He did not ask the hospital to name a wing after Gabriel. He did not offer a donation in exchange for public praise.
Instead, he established a fund through independent trustees to help families facing emergency travel and accommodation expenses when a child required intensive care.
The fund was anonymous at first.
When reporters eventually connected it to him, Damian refused to attend the press conference.
He did not want Gabriel's name used to polish his reputation.
That evening, he watched the fourteen-second video one more time.
He had memorized every breath.
Then he saved it in a secure archive and put the phone away.

For the first time, he understood that remembering his son did not require reopening the wound every hour.
It required living in a way that honored the life that had existed, however briefly.
