Chapter 7 - A Home Without Guards

Z

By the end of January, Claire had found a small house on the outskirts of Bellweather.

It had two bedrooms, a narrow porch, and a kitchen with yellow cabinets that needed repainting. The bathroom tap dripped. The back door stuck when the temperature fell below freezing.

Claire loved it immediately.

She paid the deposit from her own savings and used a modest amount of money legally provided under the separation agreement. Katherine made sure the transfer was documented and could not be used as leverage.

Adrian helped her carry two boxes inside.

He did not send movers or hire a crew.

He asked where she wanted the furniture and waited for her answer.

When he noticed that one of the windows didn't lock properly, he offered to repair it.

Claire shook her head.

"I can call the landlord."

"All right."

He did not argue.

That small exchange mattered more than he could have known.

For years, Damian had treated every problem as something he should solve personally. Sometimes he was generous. Sometimes he was controlling. He rarely understood the difference.

Adrian seemed willing to leave room for her decisions.

After he finished carrying the boxes, Claire made tea.

They sat at the kitchen table beneath a light that flickered every few minutes.

"I used to think being loved meant someone would always come when I called," Claire said.

Adrian wrapped both hands around his mug.

"That's not unreasonable."

"I know people get delayed. I know emergencies happen. But Damian had a choice."

"Yes."

"He had a plane. He had pilots. He had people who could arrange anything. He had eight calls from his wife."

Her voice cracked.

"And he still didn't come."

Adrian did not tell her that Damian was grieving. He did not say she should forgive him because he had lost a child too.

He simply listened.

"I keep thinking about Gabriel's hand," Claire whispered. "It was so small. I held my finger against his palm, and he curled his fingers around it. I thought he was holding on."

She covered her face.

Adrian waited until she lowered her hands.

"You don't have to be strong every minute."

"I don't know how not to be."

"Then don't start with strength. Start with breathing."

She inhaled shakily.

He breathed with her, slowly, until her shoulders loosened.

That evening, Adrian left before dark.

At the door, he paused.

"If you ever want company, you can call me. If you don't, that's fine too."

Claire looked at him.

"Why are you so careful with me?"

His expression changed.

"Because I know what it's like to have people decide your life belongs to them."

He left without asking for anything in return.

Claire locked the door, checked the window, and stood in the quiet house.

For the first time since leaving Chicago, the silence did not feel like abandonment.

It felt like something she had chosen.
