Chapter 7 - THE COURTROOM

The criminal case against Adam was narrower than the story in my head.
That was healthy.
Courts decide charges.
Not entire human beings.
The kitchen video mattered.
Sophie’s statements mattered.
Medical records mattered.
Prior documented bruising mattered.
Witnesses mattered.
Noah testified.
Ryan testified reluctantly.
Paul testified.
Melissa claimed she could not remember several details.
Judith defended Adam.
My mother eventually testified truthfully about the prior incident she witnessed.
That cost her deeply.
Maybe that was the beginning of change.
Adam did not face a fantasy sentence of a hundred years.
The charges reflected documented conduct.
He ultimately accepted a plea after prosecutors and defense reached an agreement involving child-abuse-related offenses, probationary supervision conditions, mandatory intervention programs, and restrictions on contact pending family-court review.
Some people thought that wasn't enough.
At first, I did too.
Then Claire reminded me:
“Criminal punishment is not the only protection.”
Family court mattered.
Protective orders mattered.
Therapy.
Custody conditions.
Documentation.
Adam’s access to Sophie would depend on her safety, professional recommendations, and his behavior over time.
There was no magical courtroom moment that fixed everything.
Good.

Life did not need one.
