Chapter 8 - THE TRUTH BEHIND THE BALLROOM EMBRACE

Sophie arrived in Vermont two weeks later.

Emma hadn't seen her in person for nearly four years.

They stood facing each other in the bookstore.

Neither knew what to say.

Sophie looked older.

Thinner.

Her blond hair was shorter.

Her eyes filled when she saw Emma.

“Em.”

Emma swallowed.

“Sophie.”

They sat in the back office.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Then Sophie said:

“I owe you the truth.”

Emma looked down.

“I think you do.”

Sophie explained everything.

Adrian Mercer.

The financial fraud.

The threats.

The private photographs.

The fear.

She told Emma how she'd approached Daniel because he had access to legal resources and trusted professionals.

How he'd helped her find an attorney.

How she'd begged him not to tell Emma.

Emma listened.

Then whispered:

“You could have told me.”

Sophie began crying.

“I know.”

“Why didn't you?”

“Because I was ashamed.”

Emma looked away.

Sophie continued.

“You spent your whole life cleaning up my mistakes.”

Her voice broke.

“I couldn't bear making you do it again.”

Emma closed her eyes.

“And Daniel?”

Sophie shook her head.

“He never touched me romantically.”

Emma swallowed.

“Never?”

“Never.”

Sophie looked at her.

“He loved you.”

Emma began crying.

Sophie continued.

“He was trying to help me without betraying my confidence.”

For a moment, Emma couldn't speak.

Then she whispered:

“I thought he chose you.”

Sophie shook her head.

“He was trying to protect me.”

Emma covered her face.

Four years.

Four years of misunderstanding.

Four years of silence.

Four years of a father missing his daughter.

Sophie reached toward her.

Emma pulled back.

“Not yet.”

Sophie froze.

Emma wiped her tears.

“I need time.”

Sophie nodded.

“Okay.”

That evening, Emma called Daniel.

He answered immediately.

“Emma?”

She swallowed.

“Sophie told me everything.”

Silence.

Then Daniel exhaled.

“Okay.”

Emma closed her eyes.

“I was wrong.”

Daniel said nothing.

She continued.

“I should have listened.”

His voice softened.

“I should have found a way to tell you enough to reassure you without exposing her.”

Emma began crying.

“We both made mistakes.”

Daniel was silent.

Then whispered:

“Yes.”

For the first time in four years, they were speaking honestly.

And the truth was painful.

But it was also the beginning of something neither had expected.
