Chapter 3 - TWO PINK LINES AND A ONE-WAY TICKET

Emma arrived in Vermont beneath a gray October sky.

The house stood near a narrow road outside Burlington.

White clapboard siding.

Blue shutters.

A porch overlooking a small garden.

Her aunt had left it to her three years earlier.

Emma had always planned to use it as a summer retreat.

Now it became a hiding place.

She unpacked slowly.

Books.

Clothes.

Photographs.

The pregnancy test.

She placed it inside a drawer.

Then sat on the bed.

For the first time since leaving Chicago, she allowed herself to imagine the baby.

A little boy.

Or girl.

Tiny fingers.

A heartbeat.

A future.

Her eyes filled.

The next morning, she made an appointment with a local obstetrician.

At the clinic, the doctor confirmed the pregnancy.

Emma stared at the ultrasound screen.

A small shape.

A flicker of movement.

A heartbeat.

She covered her mouth.

“Oh.”

The doctor smiled.

“There you are.”

Emma began crying.

That evening, Daniel called again.

Emma watched the phone vibrate.

Then turned it facedown.

A message appeared.

Emma, I need to know you're safe.

Another.

Please answer.

Then:

I love you.

Emma closed her eyes.

She wanted to believe him.

But she couldn't forget the corridor.

Sophie's tears.

Daniel's hands.

The secret.

Nora called.

“How are you?”

Emma swallowed.

“Pregnant.”

Nora laughed softly.

“Yes, honey. I know.”

Emma smiled through her tears.

“I heard the heartbeat.”

Nora went quiet.

Then whispered:

“Oh, Emma.”

For the next several months, Emma built a new life.

She arranged to sell her share of the Chicago bookstore to Nora under a structured agreement.

She found part-time work at a small independent bookshop.

She attended medical appointments.

She learned how to live alone.

Daniel continued searching for answers.

He contacted Nora.

Emma's friends.

Her family.

But Emma had asked Nora not to reveal her location.

Nora struggled with that promise.

She believed Daniel deserved to know about the child.

But she also knew Emma was frightened and emotionally overwhelmed.

Eventually, she told Emma:

“You can't keep this from him forever.”

Emma looked down.

“I know.”

But every day she waited made the truth harder to tell.

In June, Emma gave birth to a daughter.

She named her Lily Grace Carlisle.

The baby had dark hair.

Gray-blue eyes.

And a tiny crease between her eyebrows when she frowned.

Exactly like Daniel.

Emma held her against her chest.

And whispered:

“Hello, sweetheart.”

Lily opened her eyes.

Emma began crying.

“I promise I'll love you enough for both of us.”

But even as she said it, she knew something.

May you like

Love wasn't a substitute for the truth.

And one day, Lily would ask about her father.
