Chapter 10 - THE FATHER WHO REFUSED TO WALK AWAY

Daniel rented a small house near Emma's bookstore.

He arranged his work so he could spend more time in Vermont.

He didn't demand custody.

Didn't threaten legal action.

Didn't use his wealth to pressure Emma.

Instead, he consulted independent counsel and worked with Emma to establish a parenting arrangement centered on Lily's needs.

He learned everything.

Lily's favorite breakfast.

Her bedtime routine.

The way she hated socks with seams.

The way she needed the same story read twice before sleeping.

One afternoon, Lily fell while running in the park.

She scraped her knee.

Then began crying.

Daniel rushed toward her.

“Sweetheart.”

He knelt.

Lily reached for him.

“Daddy.”

He froze.

Then gently picked her up.

“I'm here.”

She buried her face against his shoulder.

Daniel closed his eyes.

For a moment, he couldn't breathe.

Emma watched from several feet away.

Her eyes filled.

Because she saw something she'd denied Lily for years.

A father who wanted to be there.

That evening, Daniel brought Lily home.

Emma opened the door.

Lily ran inside.

“Mommy! Daddy fixed my knee!”

Emma smiled.

“Did he?”

Lily nodded.

“With a dinosaur bandage.”

Daniel laughed softly.

“Very advanced medicine.”

Emma smiled.

After Lily went upstairs, Daniel stood in the doorway.

“Thank you.”

Emma frowned.

“For what?”

“For letting me be part of her life.”

Her eyes filled.

“Daniel, she's your daughter.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

He hesitated.

“Emma?”

“Yes?”

“I still love you.”

Her heart stopped.

Daniel continued.

“But I don't expect anything from you.”

He looked toward the stairs.

“I'm here for Lily. Whatever happens between us.”

Emma began crying.

Because for the first time, she understood something.

Daniel wasn't asking her to choose him.

May you like

He was choosing to be a father.

And that mattered more than any romantic promise.
