Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN WHO WOULD NOT BE SILENCED

Rosie refused to disappear.
She continued working.
Continued meeting with Evelyn.
Continued gathering information about her father's death.
The investigation revealed that Samuel had discovered fraudulent shipping documents connected to illegal cargo.
He had threatened to report the operation.
Shortly afterward, he died in the warehouse accident.
The official report blamed faulty machinery.
But photographs suggested the equipment had been tampered with.
Evelyn submitted the new evidence to investigators.
Dante's attorney provided additional company records.
The case was reopened.
Rosie learned that Dante had been cooperating.
She didn't know how to feel.
Part of her remained angry.
Another part recognized that he was finally doing what he should have done years earlier.
One afternoon, Evelyn handed her a letter.
"From Dante."
Rosie hesitated.
Then opened it.
The letter was short.
Rosie,
I know you asked me not to contact you. I'm respecting that. Evelyn agreed to pass this along because it concerns your father's case.
I have provided every relevant record I could locate. I will continue cooperating with investigators.
I cannot change what happened to Samuel. I cannot undo the years you spent without answers.
But I can stop protecting the silence that allowed it.
You owe me nothing.
Dante
Rosie read it twice.

Then folded it carefully.
For the first time, she wondered whether Dante Valerio was capable of becoming someone different from the man his father had raised.
