Chapter 12 - THE RIVER THAT TOOK EVERYTHING

The trial began in autumn.

Rosie sat in the courtroom beside Aunt Martha.

Dante sat several rows behind them.

He had offered to stay away if his presence made Rosie uncomfortable.

She had told him he could attend.

But not beside her.

This was her father's story.

Her family's grief.

Her right to face the truth.

Dante respected that.

Witnesses testified.

Documents were presented.

Henry Cole described the night of the sabotage.

Martin Voss admitted his role.

Conrad Hale denied responsibility.

But the evidence was overwhelming.

The jury convicted Hale of charges arising from the sabotage and Samuel's death.

Voss faced sentencing for his involvement.

Rosie listened to the verdict without moving.

For years, she'd imagined this moment.

She'd thought she would feel triumph.

Instead, she felt tired.

And sad.

Her father was still gone.

No verdict could bring him back.

Outside the courthouse, reporters gathered.

Rosie stepped toward the microphones.

Her crutch clicked against the pavement.

She looked directly into the cameras.

"My father was a good man."

Her voice trembled.

"He believed that doing the right thing mattered, even when it was dangerous."

She swallowed.

"Today, the truth was finally heard."

She paused.

"And I hope no family has to wait as long as ours did."

Behind the crowd, Dante watched silently.

He did not approach.

May you like

He did not interrupt.

He simply stood there, allowing Rosie to have the moment that belonged to her.
