Chapter 14 - THE LOVE THAT DIDN'T ASK HER TO CHANGE

Their relationship grew slowly.

There were awkward moments.

Arguments.

Misunderstandings.

Dante had spent years controlling everything around him.

Rosie had spent years fighting to control her own life.

Neither found compromise easy.

But they learned.

Dante asked before helping her.

Rosie learned that accepting assistance didn't mean surrendering independence.

He stopped treating accessibility as an afterthought.

She stopped assuming every kind gesture carried a hidden price.

They traveled.

Visited museums.

Walked along the river.

Spent evenings reading in silence.

Rosie completed her library science qualification and accepted a position at a community library.

She loved the work.

The children.

The books.

The feeling of belonging.

Dante attended her graduation.

He sat in the front row.

When her name was called, he stood and applauded.

Rosie spotted him.

She smiled.

And for a moment, the years of rejection and humiliation seemed very far away.

That evening, Dante took her to the restaurant where they'd first met.

Nora greeted them warmly.

Their corner table was waiting.

Rosie laughed.

"You planned this."

Dante smiled.

"Maybe."

They sat.

Ordered soup.

And talked about the future.

Then Dante reached across the table.

"Rosie."

She looked up.

"Yes?"

He hesitated.

"I love you."

Her breath caught.

Dante continued.

"I don't love you because you're strong."

She stared.

"I don't love you because you've survived terrible things."

His voice softened.

"I love you because you're you."

Rosie's eyes filled.

"The woman who argues with me about books."

He smiled.

"The woman who laughs when I burn dinner."

She laughed through tears.

"The woman who makes ordinary days feel like something worth protecting."

Rosie squeezed his hand.

"I love you too."

Dante closed his eyes.

May you like

For the first time in years, he felt something stronger than fear.

Hope.
