Chapter 6 - The Emergency Boardroom Ambush

While the arrests were underway in Scarsdale, Victoria Sterling and I arrived at the 35th-floor executive boardroom of Mercer Enterprises in downtown Manhattan.
I wore a sharp ivory tailored suit over my chest brace, my left arm resting in a supportive sling, my posture upright and unbreakable. Flanking us were four forensic auditors from Ernst & Young and two federal marshals carrying court orders.
The boardroom was filled with the twelve institutional directors and major shareholders of the company, who had convened an emergency meeting following news of the police presence at the Scarsdale estate.
Arthur Montgomery, the senior independent trustee, stood up as I entered.
“Nora! What is happening? The stock price is plummeting, and neither Graham nor Russell is answering their phones!”
Victoria Sterling stepped to the head of the table, placing our master portfolio on the presentation lectern.
“Graham and Russell Mercer are currently in federal holding cells, Mr. Montgomery,” Victoria announced with devastating clarity. “And effective immediately, under Section 14 of the corporate bylaws regarding moral turpitude and criminal indictment, their executive powers have been vacated.”
Gasps erupted around the table.
I tapped the remote control, activating the central presentation screens.
For forty-five minutes, I guided the board through the undeniable evidence:
Over $14 million in diverted operating cash funneled into offshore shell accounts owned by Judith Mercer.
Forged corporate loan guarantees that had unlawfully leveraged the company’s primary shipping terminals.
Complete financial reconciliation showing that Mercer Enterprises had been kept solvent solely through the restructuring plans and intellectual property I had created over the last four years.
“Russell and Graham were not building this company,” I told the stunned directors. “They were hollowing it out from the inside to fund their vanity, gambling, and legal payoffs. Here is my proposal: a full judicial receivership, independent forensic restructuring, and the immediate recovery of all embezzled assets from the Mercer family trust.”
Director Montgomery looked at the board members. Every single hand around the table rose in unanimous agreement.
“The motion carries,” Montgomery declared, looking at me with profound respect. “Nora Mercer is hereby appointed Interim Chief Executive Officer and Managing Trustee of Mercer Enterprises.”

I sat down at the head of the mahogany table, looking out over the Manhattan skyline.
The family that had tried to bury me had instead handed me the gavel to their entire empire.
