Chapter 8 - THE TRIAL NOLAN NEVER EXPECTED

Nolan eventually faced court proceedings connected to financial fraud and violations involving me.

I testified.

Dante did not sit directly behind me.

That was my request.

I did not want Nolan looking at Dante and telling himself a more powerful man had defeated him.

I wanted him to look at me.

I described the first time he grabbed me.

The first apology.

The escalation.

The isolation.

The money.

The threats.

The gala.

Then Nolan's attorney asked:

“Ms. Bennett, isn't it true that on the night in question you publicly kissed another man?”

“Yes.”

“While still in a relationship with Mr. Pierce?”

“Yes.”

“Would you agree that this action was humiliating?”

“For Nolan?”

“Yes.”

“Probably.”

“Could his emotional response therefore be understandable?”

I looked directly at Nolan.

“Being humiliated doesn't give someone permission to hurt another person.”

Silence.

The attorney changed direction.

---

Evan testified too.

That was harder.

He admitted accepting Nolan's money.

Admitted minimizing my reports.

Admitted holding part of the transferred savings.

His voice broke.

“I failed my sister.”

I looked down.

For the first time, he was saying publicly what I had needed him to understand privately.

Not:

I misunderstood.

Not:

Relationships are complicated.

I failed her.

It did not erase anything.

But truth mattered.

---

Nolan was held accountable for the conduct the evidence supported.

Financial restitution was ordered through the relevant proceedings.

The protective restrictions remained.

His professional career collapsed under the fraud findings.

I did not smile when it happened.

I expected victory to feel bigger.

Instead, I felt tired.

Outside the courthouse Dante waited beside the car.

He did not ask:

Did we win?

He asked:

“What do you want for dinner?”

I laughed so hard I cried.

“Pizza.”

“That's your celebration?”

“Pizza and sweatpants.”

“Terrifying.”

“And no security discussion for two hours.”

“One.”

“Two.”

“Ninety minutes.”

“Deal.”

That was our relationship.

Negotiation.

Not obedience.

---

A year later, I moved in with Dante.

By choice.

My apartment remained mine for another six months.

Also by choice.

The first evening at his house, I discovered something.

My own room.

Not a bedroom separate from his.

An office.

Bookshelves.

Desk.

Window overlooking the garden.

“What is this?”

“Yours.”

“You made me an office?”

“You work.”

“I know.”

“So you need somewhere to work.”

I walked inside.

Then saw the lock.

It locked from inside.

I turned.

Dante understood immediately.

“No one has a key except you.”

My throat tightened.

“You thought about that?”

“Yes.”

I kissed him.

May you like

The first kiss had been desperation.

This one was home.
