Chapter 1 - THE KISS THAT STOPPED THE BALLROOM

Nolan’s fingers were digging into my arm so hard I already knew what the bruises would look like tomorrow.

To everyone else in that glittering ballroom, he looked like a handsome boyfriend guiding his date toward the exit.

To me, he looked like the man who had already taught me what happened after closed doors.

I should have stayed quiet.

I should have gone with him.

I should have let the night end the way all my nights with him ended.

But then I looked across the room and saw Dante Moretti.

He wasn’t smiling.

He wasn’t laughing.

He wasn’t trying to impress anyone.

And somehow that made every powerful man in the room orbit around him anyway.

Chicago whispered his name like a warning.

Older.

Untouchable.

Dangerous.

The kind of man even cruel men were careful around.

Nolan pulled me harder.

“Move,” he muttered through a smile meant for strangers.

That was when something inside me snapped.

Not loudly.

Not bravely.

Just completely.

I tore my arm free, walked straight through a room full of diamonds and fake laughter, put my hand on Dante Moretti’s chest, and kissed him in front of everyone.

I didn’t plan it.

I didn’t think.

I just knew Nolan would never touch me in front of a man like that.

For one second, Dante went perfectly still.

For the next, his hand closed around my waist like he had already decided I was no longer standing alone.

When he pulled back, he didn’t ask if I was drunk.

He didn’t ask if I was confused.

He looked straight into my face and asked one cold, terrifying question.

“Who am I saving you from?”

I didn’t even get the answer out before Nolan stormed over.

He was furious.

Then he recognized who I was standing with.

And for the first time since I met him, I watched fear hit Nolan harder than rage.

He tried to laugh it off.

He called me emotional.

Unstable.

Confused.

He told Dante I was his girlfriend and he was taking me home.

Home.

That word nearly made me sick.

Because home was where he apologized after he hurt me.

Home was where the lies started.

Home was where no one could hear the truth if I finally screamed it.

So I did the one thing I had never managed to do before.

I said it in front of everybody.

“He hits me.”

The room changed.

Not all at once.

But enough.

Enough for women nearby to stop pretending not to hear.

Enough for men to suddenly look uncomfortable.

Enough for Nolan to realize the lie he always used on me had just failed in public.

Then Dante looked at my arm.

Really looked.

At the fresh finger marks Nolan had left there only minutes earlier.

He said nothing for three full seconds.

Then he crossed the room, grabbed Nolan by the throat, and told him to walk out before he learned what real fear felt like.

Nolan obeyed.

That should have been the end of it.

It wasn’t even the beginning.

Because that same night, Dante told me I couldn’t go back to my apartment.

Because Nolan was already waiting outside.

Because Dante said a man like him would never stop at humiliation.

And because when I got into Dante’s armored SUV, I thought I was escaping one dangerous man.

I had no idea I was stepping into the protection of another.

And what Dante said to me on that ride changed everything.
