Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK FOR HIM

Leo withdrew from public life while the investigations continued.

He moved into a modest townhouse outside New York.

No marble floors.

No armed men in every hallway.

No private elevators.

Just a small garden and a kitchen with mismatched chairs.

Christa visited one rainy afternoon.

Leo opened the door.

He looked exhausted.

“Christa.”

She smiled.

“Hello.”

He hesitated.

“You shouldn't be here.”

“Why?”

“Because I'm not the man you met.”

She looked around.

“No.”

His expression tightened.

“I don't have the same power.”

“I know.”

“The same money.”

“I know.”

He swallowed.

“Then why are you here?”

Christa stepped closer.

“Because I never wanted your power.”

His eyes filled.

She continued:

“I wanted the man who gave me a choice when everyone else tried to take mine away.”

Leo stared.

Then whispered:

“Christa.”

She smiled through her tears.

“And I still want him.”

He pulled her into his arms.

For a long time, neither spoke.

Because some answers don't need speeches.

Sometimes they just need someone to stay.
