Chapter 6 - THE SECRET IN THE SHIPPING CONTAINERS

Detective Ruiz's investigation uncovered a pattern.

Temporary event credentials issued through Vale Events had been copied and reused.

Several Moretti-owned properties had experienced unauthorized access.

Financial records showed fraudulent vendor payments.

And Crosswell Capital appeared repeatedly in the transaction chain.

Evelyn cooperated fully.

She provided contracts, emails, staffing records, and access logs.

She also retained independent legal counsel.

For the first time in her professional life, she had to accept that doing everything correctly did not guarantee safety.

Lucien met with Ruiz privately.

He disclosed information about his own company's irregular operations.

Some of it implicated former associates.

Some of it raised questions about his own past.

He did not pretend otherwise.

Evelyn learned about the meeting afterward.

“You could be exposing yourself,” she said.

Lucien nodded.

“I know.”

“Then why do it?”

He looked at her.

“Because the alternative is letting people keep using my name as an excuse.”

She studied him.

“Were you always this principled?”

His expression darkened.

“No.”

The honesty surprised her.

He continued.

“I inherited an organization built on fear. For years, I believed fear was the only thing keeping it together.”

“And now?”

He looked toward the window.

“Now I'm discovering how expensive that belief was.”

Their relationship changed slowly.

They had dinner.

They walked through Central Park.

They argued about art.

Evelyn discovered Lucien hated modern sculpture.

Lucien discovered Evelyn loved terrible romantic comedies.

He teased her.

She teased him back.

And somewhere between police interviews and late-night conversations, she began to forget she was supposed to be afraid of him.

One evening, they sat on the balcony of his penthouse.

The city glittered below.

Lucien handed her a cup of tea.

Evelyn looked at him.

“Why did you really help me?”

He sat beside her.

“Because you asked.”

She smiled faintly.

“That simple?”

“No.”

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Because when you kissed me at the gala, you looked terrified.”

Evelyn stared.

“And for one second, I wanted to be someone who made you feel safe.”

Her throat tightened.

“Lucien.”

He looked away.

“I know what people say about me.”

She touched his hand.

“I know.”

He looked back.

“And?”

Evelyn smiled sadly.

“I think you're trying to become someone different.”

Lucien's eyes softened.

Then he leaned closer.

This time, he stopped before their lips met.

“May I?”

Evelyn smiled.

“Yes.”

And when he kissed her, there was no ex to escape.

No audience.

No performance.

Only a choice.

May you like

Hers.

And his.
