Chapter 12 - THE FALL OF VICTOR SLOANE

Victor Sloane was arrested six weeks later.

The investigation had uncovered extensive financial fraud.

Money intended for medical charities had been diverted through shell companies.

Security contractors had been paid to intimidate witnesses.

False documents had been created to conceal unauthorized access to commercial properties.

Sloane denied wrongdoing.

But the evidence was substantial.

Adrian cooperated with prosecutors.

Sarah Whitcomb testified.

Daniel's communications supported key parts of the investigation.

Lucien provided financial records from Moretti Holdings.

Some exposed his own company's failures.

Others implicated former associates.

The investigation changed his business empire.

Several subsidiaries were sold.

Others were restructured under independent compliance oversight.

Lucien stepped away from the criminal relationships that had shaped his reputation.

He lost money.

Influence.

Old allies.

But he gained something he'd never possessed before.

The ability to look at his own life without pretending the damage belonged to someone else.

One evening, Evelyn found him standing on his penthouse balcony.

He looked exhausted.

“Bad day?” she asked.

Lucien smiled faintly.

“Expensive day.”

She stood beside him.

“Regrets?”

He considered.

“Many.”

She looked at him.

“But not about telling the truth?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

Evelyn took his hand.

“Good.”

He turned toward her.

“Do you ever wish you'd kissed someone else?”

She laughed.

“Frequently.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“Really?”

“Someone with fewer legal complications would have been nice.”

Lucien smiled.

“I'll try to be less complicated.”

Evelyn leaned against him.

“Don't make promises you can't keep.”

He kissed her forehead.

“Fair.”

And for the first time, the future felt possible.

Not perfect.

May you like

Not safe from every disappointment.

But honest.
