Chapter 6 - THE FILE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Three days later, Marco brought Aleandro a report.

I was sitting in the library when he entered.

The two men spoke quietly.

Then Aleandro looked toward me.

“Amanda.”

I stood.

“What happened?”

He hesitated.

“We found a connection between Ryan Mercer and Victor Sanz.”

My stomach tightened.

“What kind?”

“Financial.”

He placed a document on the table.

It showed transfers between several companies.

One belonged to Ryan's employer.

Another was connected to Victor Sanz.

The third was a medical supply distributor.

I frowned.

“Why would a construction company send money to a medical supplier?”

Aleandro looked at me.

“That's what we're trying to understand.”

I studied the name.

HARBOR MEDICAL LOGISTICS.

Something stirred in my memory.

I leaned closer.

“I've seen that company before.”

Aleandro went still.

“Where?”

“At Mount Sinai.”

Marco looked up.

I continued.

“They deliver specialized equipment to one of our contracted departments.”

Aleandro's expression changed.

“Are you certain?”

I nodded.

“I signed for a delivery last month.”

The room fell silent.

Then I remembered something else.

Two weeks earlier, Ryan had asked me whether the hospital kept electronic records of incoming medical shipments.

I'd thought he was making conversation.

Now I wasn't so sure.

Aleandro looked at Marco.

“Get our attorneys involved. We need this handled properly.”

Marco nodded.

Then left.

I stared at the documents.

“Ryan wasn't just using me.”

Aleandro looked at me.

“What do you mean?”

My throat tightened.

“He was trying to find out how shipments moved through the hospital.”

Aleandro said nothing.

I looked up.

“And I told him.”
