Chapter 8 - THE BETRAYAL AT THE TABLE

Leo Marino had worked beside Ronan for fourteen years.
He was loud.
Impulsive.
Loyal, or so Ronan believed.
He had been present the night Sadie spilled the scotch.
He had slammed his fist against the table.
He had caused the sudden noise that made her flinch.
Ronan remembered everything.
The timing.
The anger.
The way Leo watched Sadie afterward.
It hadn't been an accident.
Leo had been instructed to provoke a reaction.
Rourke wanted Ronan to see the injuries.
He wanted Ronan to become emotionally involved.
Then he planned to use Sadie as leverage in the waterfront dispute.
Ronan stared at Rebecca.
“How long?”
“At least eighteen months.”
He closed his eyes.
Leo had been selling information.
Shipping schedules.
Contract details.
Security arrangements.
Rourke had paid him through shell companies.
Ronan felt something cold settle inside him.
Not rage.
Disappointment.
***
He met Leo the following morning.
Rebecca and two independent security professionals were present.
Leo entered smiling.
“Boss.”
Ronan gestured toward a chair.
“Sit.”
Leo looked around.
“What's this?”
Ronan placed the financial records on the table.
Leo's smile disappeared.
Silence.
Then he laughed.
“Come on, Ronan.”
“Explain the transfers.”
Leo stared.
“It's complicated.”
“Then simplify it.”
Leo leaned forward.
“You don't understand what Rourke offered.”
Ronan remained silent.
“He offered me my own operation.”
“And you accepted.”
Leo swallowed.
“I deserved more.”
Ronan looked at him.
“Then you should have left.”
Leo's expression hardened.
“You think you're better than the rest of us now?”
“No.”
Ronan stood.
“But I'm done pretending betrayal is loyalty.”
Leo looked toward the door.
Ronan nodded to Rebecca.
“The records have been provided to investigators. Your access to the companies is revoked.”
Leo stared.
“You're turning me in?”
“Your actions are yours to explain.”
Leo's face twisted.
“You've gone soft.”
Ronan looked at him.
“No.”
He paused.
“I've stopped confusing cruelty with strength.”
***
Sadie learned about Leo's betrayal that evening.
She sat quietly while Ronan explained.
When he finished, she whispered:
“He did it on purpose?”
“Yes.”
“The fist on the table?”
“Yes.”
Sadie looked down.
For weeks, she had blamed herself for dropping the bottle.
For being weak.
For reacting.
Now she understood that someone had deliberately triggered her fear.
Her eyes filled.
Ronan leaned forward.
“Sadie.”
She looked up.
“You did nothing wrong.”
She shook her head.
“I know.”
Then she began crying.
“I know that now.”
Ronan waited.
When she reached for his hand, he took it gently.
***
The investigation expanded.
Leo cooperated with prosecutors after his arrest.
He identified additional members of Rourke's network.
He also revealed something disturbing.
Carl had been paid to monitor Sadie's movements.
But the original arrangement had changed.
Rourke no longer wanted only information.
He wanted Sadie silenced.
Because she had found the notebook.
Because she had spoken to investigators.
Because she could connect Carl to the wider operation.
Ronan contacted Rebecca immediately.
“Tell the investigators.”
“They already know.”
“And Sadie?”
“She'll be informed through the appropriate channels.”
Ronan looked toward the window.
For the first time, he felt truly afraid.
Not of Rourke.
Not of losing money.
Not of betrayal.
May you like
Of losing someone who had begun to matter more than the empire he had built.
