Chapter 12 - THE HOUSE WITH NO LOCKED DOORS

Two years after the night at the Continental, Sadie graduated.

Ronan attended.

So did Hannah.

Thomas sent flowers.

Several coworkers cheered when her name was called.

Sadie crossed the stage with tears in her eyes.

She had once believed her future ended at the restaurant's service entrance.

Now she held a degree.

And a job offer.

***

She accepted a position at a nonprofit supporting survivors of domestic violence.

Her work involved connecting clients with housing resources, legal assistance, and counseling.

She loved it.

Some days were difficult.

Some stories reminded her of Carl.

But she had learned to recognize her own limits.

She attended therapy.

Took breaks.

Asked for help.

And reminded herself that compassion didn't require self-destruction.

***

Ronan had changed too.

His legitimate shipping company remained successful.

But the illegal casinos were gone.

The corrupt waterfront contracts had been dissolved.

He no longer surrounded himself with men who mistook intimidation for loyalty.

He hired professional managers.

Established compliance oversight.

And began living without expecting every disagreement to become a war.

One afternoon, Sadie visited his home.

A large house overlooking the Hudson River.

She stood in the entryway.

“It's beautiful.”

Ronan smiled.

“Thank you.”

She looked around.

Then noticed something.

“No guards?”

“Security outside.”

“No men standing in every hallway?”

“No.”

She smiled.

“Progress.”

Ronan laughed.

“Apparently.”

***

They cooked dinner together.

Ronan burned the bread.

Sadie laughed until she cried.

He looked offended.

“It's edible.”

“It's charcoal.”

“That's dramatic.”

She held up a slice.

“Ronan, this could be used as a weapon.”

He laughed.

Then kissed her.

***

Later, they sat on the terrace.

The river reflected the moonlight.

Sadie leaned against him.

“Do you ever miss it?”

“What?”

“The old life.”

Ronan considered.

“Sometimes I miss the certainty.”

She looked up.

“Certainty?”

“When everyone was afraid of me, I always knew how they'd behave.”

Sadie studied him.

“And now?”

“Now I have to trust people.”

She smiled.

“Terrifying.”

“Absolutely.”

They laughed.

Then Ronan became serious.

“Sadie, would you ever consider living here?”

She went still.

He noticed.

“No pressure.”

She looked around.

The house was beautiful.

But beauty had once been used to trap her.

Carl promised nice things.

Then used them as leverage.

She took a breath.

“I don't know.”

Ronan nodded.

“Okay.”

“You're not upset?”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“I need to know I can leave whenever I want.”

“You can.”

“And that my money stays mine.”

“Of course.”

“And that this house doesn't become another place where I disappear.”

Ronan took her hand.

“Then let's make sure it never does.”

Sadie's eyes filled.

She smiled.

“Maybe someday.”

Ronan kissed her forehead.

May you like

“Someday is enough.”
