Chapter 11 - THE EMPIRE HE CHOSE TO LEAVE

Ronan Hayes began dismantling his criminal operations the following year.

Not overnight.

Not without consequences.

He worked with attorneys and regulators to separate legitimate businesses from illegal activities.

Some companies were sold.

Others closed.

Several former associates turned against him.

He cooperated with investigations where required.

He accepted financial penalties.

And he faced the possibility that his past would follow him for the rest of his life.

Rebecca warned him.

“You may lose most of what you've built.”

Ronan nodded.

“I know.”

“Then why do it?”

He looked toward the window.

“Because I don't want the rest of my life built on the same things.”

***

Sadie watched the changes from a distance.

She cared about Ronan.

But she refused to become the reason he claimed to change.

One evening, she told him:

“You have to do this for yourself.”

Ronan nodded.

“I know.”

“Not because you think it'll make me love you.”

He looked at her.

“I already know you might never love me.”

Sadie's expression softened.

“That's not what I meant.”

“I understand.”

He smiled faintly.

“I want to become someone I can respect.”

She studied him.

“Then keep going.”

***

Sadie enrolled in a social work program.

She wanted to help people experiencing domestic abuse.

She knew she couldn't save everyone.

She knew recovery was complicated.

But she wanted to use what she had learned.

Ronan offered to pay her tuition.

She declined.

He accepted.

She applied for grants.

Worked part-time.

Studied late.

Sometimes Ronan brought dinner.

Sometimes he helped her quiz for exams.

He was terrible at remembering psychological theories.

She teased him mercilessly.

He loved every second.

***

One evening, Sadie fell asleep over a textbook.

Ronan covered her with a blanket.

Then sat beside her.

She opened one eye.

“Are you leaving?”

“Soon.”

She looked at him.

“Stay a little longer.”

He smiled.

“Okay.”

She moved closer.

Rested her head against his shoulder.

For a while, they sat quietly.

Then Sadie whispered:

“Ronan?”

“Yes?”

“I think I'm falling in love with you.”

He went still.

She lifted her head.

“You don't have to say anything.”

Ronan looked at her.

“I love you, Sadie.”

Her eyes filled.

He continued.

“But I don't want you to feel you owe me that.”

She smiled through tears.

“I don't.”

He touched her cheek gently.

“May I kiss you?”

She laughed softly.

“Yes.”

Their first kiss was quiet.

Unhurried.

Nothing like the violence Sadie had once mistaken for passion.

No fear.

No obligation.

May you like

Just two people choosing each other.
