Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT THE HOSPITAL WENT DARK

The hospital lost power during a severe storm.

Emergency generators activated.

Critical equipment remained supported.

But parts of the building went dark while facilities staff worked to restore normal operations.

I was on duty.

Tristan was attending a foundation meeting across town.

And Eleanor was home recovering.

During the disruption, a patient on my floor became acutely unwell.

We activated the emergency response system.

The medical team arrived.

I helped stabilize the patient and coordinate transfer.

When the immediate crisis passed, I stepped into the corridor.

A man stood near the stairwell.

He wore a dark jacket.

I didn't recognize him.

“Can I help you?” I asked.

He looked at my badge.

“Bianca Carter?”

My stomach tightened.

“Yes?”

He took a step closer.

“Mr. Whitlock wants to speak with you.”

I froze.

“Who are you?”

He didn't answer.

Instead, he reached toward his coat pocket.

I stepped backward.

“Security!”

The man turned.

Then disappeared through the stairwell door.

Hospital security responded.

Police were notified.

The incident was documented.

No weapon was found, and the man's identity wasn't immediately established.

But the reference to Whitlock changed everything.

Tristan arrived an hour later.

He found me in the staff lounge.

I was shaking.

He sat beside me.

“Bianca.”

I looked at him.

“Someone came to the hospital.”

“I know.”

“He knew my name.”

Tristan closed his eyes.

“I know.”

I swallowed.

“He said Whitlock wanted to speak with me.”

Tristan's jaw tightened.

For a moment, I saw the ruthless businessman the newspapers described.

Then he took a breath.

And reached for my hand.

“We'll give the police everything we know.”

I nodded.

The following morning, Whitlock was questioned by investigators.

He denied sending anyone to the hospital.

He also denied involvement in the threatening photographs.

But the financial investigation continued.

And the evidence against him was growing.
