Chapter 12 - THE NURSE WHO WOULDN'T QUIT

The hospital offered me a promotion.

Clinical education coordinator.

The position involved training new nurses, improving patient safety practices, and supporting staff development.

I stared at the offer letter.

For a moment, I couldn't believe it.

Then I called Tristan.

“Guess what?”

He answered immediately.

“What happened?”

“I got promoted.”

Silence.

Then:

“Bianca!”

I laughed.

He sounded more excited than I was.

“That's incredible.”

“I know.”

“I'm proud of you.”

My eyes filled.

“Thank you.”

That evening, Tristan arrived at my apartment carrying flowers and a cake.

The cake said:

CONGRATULATIONS, BIANCA.

Underneath, in smaller letters:

PLEASE DON'T WORK 24 HOURS AGAIN.

I burst out laughing.

“Did you write that?”

He smiled.

“I had help.”

I shook my head.

“You're impossible.”

He kissed me.

“Apparently.”

My new role gave me the opportunity to address something that had bothered me for years.

Exhaustion.

Unsafe workloads.

The pressure on nurses to keep going when they were barely functioning.

I helped develop a staff-fatigue awareness initiative with hospital leadership.

It wasn't glamorous.

It didn't make headlines.

But it mattered.

One afternoon, a new nurse approached me.

She looked exhausted.

“Ms. Carter?”

I smiled.

“Bianca.”

She hesitated.

“I made a mistake during my shift.”

My expression softened.

“Tell me what happened.”

She began explaining.

I listened carefully.

Then helped her follow the appropriate reporting and safety procedures.

Afterward, she looked at me.

“Thank you for not yelling.”

I smiled sadly.

“Everyone deserves to be treated like a person.”

And suddenly, I remembered the night I'd climbed into the wrong black SUV.

How exhausted I'd been.

How embarrassed.

How certain I'd made a fool of myself.

May you like

I smiled.

Sometimes the smallest mistakes changed everything.
