Chapter 1 - THE WRONG BLACK SUV

After a brutal 24-hour hospital shift, I climbed into the wrong black SUV, fell asleep beside a stranger, and fled in total embarrassment the moment I realized my mistake. I thought I'd never see the impossibly handsome billionaire again—until three days later, I walked into a patient's room, turned around, and found him standing in the doorway staring right at me.

My name is Bianca Carter, and exhaustion almost changed the course of my entire life.

By the end of my shift at St. Catherine's Medical Center in Manhattan, I barely remembered what it felt like to think clearly. There was dried blood beneath one fingernail that refused to wash away, my back ached from lifting patients all day, and my hair had completely escaped the neat bun I'd started my shift with.

All I wanted was sleep.

Not dinner.

Not a shower.

Just sleep.

The rain had stopped an hour earlier, leaving New York's streets slick beneath the glowing city lights. My rideshare app said Black SUV. South Entrance.

When I stepped outside, a black SUV was waiting exactly where I expected.

The rear door was already slightly open.

Without thinking twice, I climbed inside.

The leather seats were softer than any furniture I owned. The cabin smelled faintly of cedar, expensive cologne, and quiet luxury. I hugged my work bag against my chest, leaned my head against the cool window, and closed my eyes.

I was asleep before the vehicle even pulled away.

I never heard the driver quietly say, ""Sir... there's already someone in the back.""

I didn't hear another door open.

I didn't even notice someone sitting beside me.

What finally woke me wasn't a sound.

It was the unmistakable feeling that someone was watching me.

I slowly opened my eyes.

A man sat beside me, calm and completely composed. Even seated, he looked tall and broad-shouldered, wearing a perfectly tailored navy suit that somehow made him seem even more intimidating. His dark eyes studied me without anger, only quiet curiosity.

For one long second, my exhausted brain refused to process what I was seeing.

Then reality crashed into me.

""This isn't my car,"" I whispered.

""No,"" he answered softly.

""It isn't.""

I shot upright so quickly my neck cracked.

""Oh my God... I'm so sorry. My app said black SUV, south entrance. I just finished a double shift. I wasn't paying attention...""

He simply nodded.

""It's all right.""

""It absolutely isn't.""

I threw open the door, stumbled onto the sidewalk, nearly tripped over my own bag, and ran.

I ran three blocks before finally stopping at a traffic light, gasping for air and laughing at myself because the entire situation felt too ridiculous to be real.

""Pull yourself together, Bianca,"" I muttered.

Meanwhile, the billionaire I had accidentally fallen asleep beside remained inside the SUV.

His name was Tristan Bellamy.

As his driver asked whether they should head home, Tristan quietly looked at the empty seat beside him.

A single strand of my dark hair had caught in the stitching of the leather.

He carefully picked it up.

Instead of throwing it away, he closed his hand around it.

""Drive,"" he finally said.

Neither of us realized that moment wasn't really the end.

It was the beginning.

Three days later, I was back at the hospital, trying to forget the most embarrassing night of my life.

My new patient was Eleanor Bellamy, a sweet sixty-eight-year-old recovering from hip surgery. She immediately made me laugh by insisting I call her Eleanor instead of Mrs. Bellamy.

""I'll be taking care of you today,"" I told her.

""I already know I like you,"" she smiled.

As I adjusted her pillow, the room door opened behind me.

""Good morning,"" I said automatically without turning. ""I'll be right with—""

I froze.

Standing in the doorway was the man from the SUV.

This time he wore a charcoal suit and carried a wool coat over one arm, but those unmistakable dark eyes met mine instantly.

Recognition flashed across both our faces.

""My son,"" Eleanor said warmly, completely unaware of our stunned silence. ""Bianca, this is Tristan.""

He stepped forward slowly.

""Bianca.""

Hearing my name in his voice made my heart skip.

I forced myself back into professional mode and adjusted my name badge with trembling fingers.

""Mr. Bellamy,"" I said.

His lips curved into the faintest smile.

""I guess this time,"" he said quietly, ""you're in the right place.""

I wished the hospital floor would open beneath my shoes.

Eleanor looked between us.

“Do you two know each other?”

“No,” I answered.

“Yes,” Tristan said simultaneously.

His mother raised an eyebrow.

I wanted to disappear.

Tristan's smile widened.

“We met briefly,” he explained.

“Where?”

I closed my eyes.

“Inside his car.”

Eleanor blinked.

Then she began laughing.

Not politely.

Not delicately.

She laughed so hard she had to hold her pillow against her stomach.

“Oh, Tristan. Finally, an interesting woman.”

“Mother.”

“Don't Mother me. How did this happen?”

I explained the rideshare mistake as quickly as possible.

When I finished, Eleanor wiped tears from her cheeks.

“My son has spent thirty-six years being suspicious of strangers, and you climbed into his car and fell asleep.”

“Mrs. Bellamy—”

“Eleanor.”

“Eleanor, I promise I wasn't trying to—”

“Darling, I know. That's what makes it wonderful.”

Tristan shook his head.

I checked Eleanor's blood pressure and tried desperately to regain my composure.

Then I noticed something.

Her smile had faded.

She was gripping the bedsheet.

“Eleanor?”

“I'm fine, sweetheart.”

But her fingers were trembling.

I checked her pulse.

Too fast.

Her skin felt cool.

“Are you having pain?”

“Just a little.”

“Where?”

She pointed toward her chest.

My embarrassment vanished.

I pressed the call button.

“Mr. Bellamy, please step back.”

Tristan's expression changed instantly.

“What is it?”

“I need the medical team.”

Eleanor tried to speak.

May you like

Then her eyes rolled backward.

And the monitor began alarming.
