Chapter 9 - THE WILL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The January board meeting took place at Carter Maritime headquarters.

Daniel arrived with Olivia Bennett.

Sophia Moretti attended as an observer for her family's proposed shipping partnership.

I was there because my name appeared in the fraudulent marriage documents.

Ryan sat at the head of the table.

His mother sat beside him.

When Daniel entered, Ryan smiled.

“Brother.”

Daniel nodded.

“Ryan.”

Their mother looked at his cane.

“You shouldn't strain yourself.”

Daniel sat.

“I'm capable of attending a meeting.”

She frowned.

“There's no need to be defensive.”

Olivia opened her briefcase.

“Let's begin.”

The board reviewed the trust.

Daniel's grandfather had left a complicated set of conditions.

But Olivia had discovered something important.

The family had been relying on an incomplete copy.

A later amendment existed.

It had been filed with the original trustee.

And it changed everything.

Olivia read aloud.

“Where a beneficiary is prevented from satisfying a condition through coercion, fraud, or interference by another beneficiary, the trustee may suspend the condition pending judicial review.”

Ryan's smile vanished.

His mother sat straighter.

Olivia continued.

“Furthermore, any transfer procured through a spouse's uninformed consent is voidable.”

Silence.

Daniel looked at Ryan.

“You tried to use Emma to take control of my inheritance.”

Ryan leaned back.

“That's absurd.”

Olivia placed the prepared spousal consent documents on the table.

“Then explain these.”

Ryan's expression tightened.

Sophia opened her own folder.

“And explain why you told my family Daniel had voluntarily surrendered control.”

Ryan stared at her.

“Sophia—”

She raised a hand.

“Don't.”

The trustee announced that the disputed transfer would not proceed.

The board ordered an independent investigation.

Ryan was removed from several executive responsibilities pending review.

His mother protested.

But the documents were clear enough to require scrutiny.

Outside the meeting room, Daniel stopped beside a window.

I approached.

“Are you okay?”

He laughed softly.

“I think so.”

I smiled.

“You won.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not yet.”

He looked at me.

“But today, nobody decided my future for me.”

I felt tears rise.

May you like

He smiled.

“And nobody decided yours either.”
